SINGAPORE: The 46th National Day Parade returns to the Marina Bay floating platform this year.

For the first time, the annual event will be presented in a two-hour musical that aims to get Singaporeans to reflect on what the "Singapore Spirit" means to them.

This year's logo, which reflects the theme "Majulah! The Singapore Spirit!", will be captured in a five-act musical that will take Singaporeans down memory lane from its tumultuous birth in 1965 to the present modern city-state.

The visual treat will take place on a specially constructed stage set against the Marina Bay skyline.

Construction work has already started, even though the birthday bash is still some three months away. The stage is expected to be completed next month when rehearsals are scheduled to take place.

Making a comeback are crowd pleasers like the Red Lions and the fly past.

And for the 27,000 people at the seating gallery, the parade will take on a different spin.

Colonel Alvin Kek, Chairman, NDP 2011 Executive Committee, said: "During the parade and ceremony, there will be two new elements. One is the "Majulah Moment", which we will see the flag-raising ceremony. We will also see an onward march where selected contingents will march past the spectators and into the spectators, symbolising our commitment as one nation."

The event will culminate with a pledge moment and singing of the national anthem.

Celebrations will also take place around the bay where some 100,000 people are expected to join in the revelry.

According to organisers, there will also be a greater emphasis on new media ranging from Facebook, YouTube, Flickr to a new mobile application, "NDPOnTheGo", to engage Singaporeans, including those overseas.

The main website comes with new features like the "Reflections wall".

"The Reflections Wall is a user-generated page where Singaporeans can post their reflections and share with other Singaporeans. These submissions can be either in the photos, videos or even short stories," said Lieutenant Colonel Tong Yi Chuen, Chairman, Branding & Publicity, NDP 2011 Executive Committee.

Another highlight is the new "Faces of NDP" section, featuring "behind the scenes footage and stories about selected organising committee staff and various parade and show participants.

Balloting for parade tickets will be from May 20 to May 29.

i feel more patriotic to recite the Pledge at WP rallies than NDP. NDP is just a farce, to experience how it felt like to be singaporean, just attend WP rally.

The Singapore Spirit died a long time ago. How to evoke a dead spirit when the spontaneity which comes from deep within oneself because of the overwhelming pride, joy, happiness and love for the nation and its peoples are not there?

When Fandi Ahmad and gang won the Malaysia Cup we all felt so proud even though it was not an international competition, yet, when Singapore won the World ping pong championship not many care too much about it except the PAP government.

I will try to arrange a holiday and not be around for this so artificial display of the Singapore Spirit.

I agree bro, I feel sad and frustrated; sad the Singapore Spirit is dying and what we see currently are pale in comparison. Still remember "segamat"

All the opposition parties should come together, book a stadium, and stage an alternative National Day party. Programmes can include:

• Retired xinyao performers from the 80s,
• Old bands like the gypsies
• Slideshow of photos taken by ordinary Singaporeans
• Breakdance and grafitti demonstration
• Bubble gum competition
• dialect cross-talk
• Nicole Seah poetry reading
• Ball juggling by Fandi Ahmad, Abbas Saad, Quah Kim Song
• Siva Choy, Kumar standup comedy
• Chen Wei Lian duet with other handicap performers
• Life internet uplink with Tan Wah Piow, Francis Seow.
• Float carrying former political detainees
• short filmlet by Singapore filmmakers

Anything else that will totally piss off the PAP?

In WP or any other Alternative Party rally, 99% are NATIVE Singaporeans. In NDP, at least 30% are NEW citizens or foreigners. How to compare ??????

Ma friend was there since young. He said Segamat durians were good durians. There's no such thing as "XO", this is a Singapore edition to woo the crowd.

Re: Good Durians

alternative NDP sounds cool, but you know the army will be called in...

RCs organize their own NDP gatherings. So what's wrong with WP organizing one. Just because they are the Opposition, does it make them less patriotic? In fact, by standing up against PAP from leading Singapore back to 2nd world lifestyle, I would say they are even more patriotic than the MIW and their sycophant followers !

I agree. Any one of the WP rally is more than NDP. Only during WP rally, I don't feel like punching my fellow singaporean in the face. Now back to reality, see my countryman, think they are a pile of dogshit.
