SINGAPORE: Singapore saw one of its lowest crime rates in 20 years last year. However, residents of private residential area, Summer Place, are not taking any chances.

Some 25 families in the neighbourhood attended a 'Citizens on Patrol' workshop organised by the Serangoon Neighbourhood Committee.

The 90-minute course, conducted by the Singapore Police Force, taught residents what to look out for while patrolling the streets.

Residents were also given some hands on practice. They were taken around the neighbourhood and shown some tell-tale signs of suspicious scenarios, such as coming across an empty house or spotting someone lurking around.

47-year-old Bob Dee, one of the participants in the workshop, said: "I have always been interested in the Citizens on patrol concept. So when PA shared with me the idea of conducting a crime prevention workshop within our estate, I volunteered to gather my neighbours together, since having a close-knit neighbourhood is very important in preventing crimes."

Handing over some of their duties and responsibilities to citizens without paying them. They forgot that they are paid to do the job and not the citizens.

maybe can also hire part time bangala to do the job?

No need patrol. Just look up and report to police for suspected crime.
That will help a lot.

Are the patrol teams empowered with citizen's arrest privilege?

If injured in the course of their "citizens on patrol' duties, are they insured? If death takes place, how? Are these fellows screened in the first place? They could well be criminals themselves!

JOHOR BARU: Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob was tied up and robbed at knife point in his house here early yesterday.

ACP Zainuddin: The intruders tied him up.
The OCPD, in his 40s, who was home alone, had a shock when at least three men surprised him at about 5.45am.
The suspects, all believed to be Indonesians, tied him up and ransacked his home.
The intruders then fled with some cash and valuables.
ACP Zainuddin managed to free himself and contact the police. He later lodged a report at the Tampoi police station.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Datuk Amer Awal said the suspects managed to enter the OCPD’s house through the back door.
“The OCPD was not harmed and so far we have detained three men in connection with the case,” he said, urging those with information to contact the police hotline at 07-221 2999 or the nearest police station.

however reading the news especially the one about the guy holding an SLR taking pics of the traffic makes me think criminals target idiots :D

Even in Spore, if some stranger offered to take me around, the first thing I'd ask is the cost

It's no wonder Sporeans are targetted because they are so naive:rolleyes:

Citizen patrol or neighborhood watch campaigns has been around for a long time, started and died, on and off. Anyway, civilians aren't supposed to take direct against criminals. When they spot an offence in progress, just call police. Take direct action at your own risk. The most you can get is police commendation. Worse, in case of injury you pay your own medical costs. Worst, the proverbial five-dollar salute at your funeral.

Thank you for confirming that JB is 3rd World. How much is the return ferry ride from Batam to JB?

It is not news certain places in JB are rampant with HIV needles threat, taxi overcharging, car windows smashing, house break-in, etc... however reading the news especially the one about the guy holding an SLR taking pics of the traffic makes me think criminals target idiots :D

Naive? I believe Singaporeans are the stupidest bunch of people i know, with a few exception like me. Old Man is also a smart fella. He is the only person who can still get away from relentlessly screwing Sinkies.
