Recorded at 4 different places in Singapore on Saturday about 1400hr 29.Jan.2011 by Uncle Yap. This is when Lee Kuan Yew Govt claimed nearly 15% Economic Growth while the consumers' buying power seems obviously weakened compared to the past years. This was the busiest bustling New Year Shopping Area in Singapore which major population is Chinese. There is only 2 more days to New Year and this is the last weekend before it.

There is NO RAIN! 2 days to CNY, and the business in CNY market and inside of shopping malls are worst than most normal weekends.

Consumers buying power is SO WEAK! And famiLEE LEEgime claimed nearly 15% of Economic Growth. See these videos and ask yourself weather does it look like 15% growth the peasants are enjoying here.

This video below was shot 2 days before the above, when it was 4 days before CNY @ Chinatown:

Because Ass Loong Son want to play NEW MEDIA with us.

So we have to teach him how badly can NEW MEDIA be used by us to screw him. Just invite you to say Fix Opposition again.:biggrin:

I already show a few ideas, I really like to see activists got inspired into all sorts of creative NEW MEDIA actions. Let the history record it about how famiLEE LEEgime will have to regret pulling NEW MEDIA game with us.

Uncle Yap:

I do not see poor business in these video. Your few "interviews" do not represent the whole pix.

If you insist that it is poor business and film it that manner then well you are right.

You took the video in the afternoon. How about in the evenings at say 7:30 p.m.? The crowd is of different size....much bigger.

However my experience in China was about 6 years ago in July 2005. MY family of 4 were in Hong Kong on the way from Canada to Singapore. We spent 5 nights in Hong Kong. I remember I took my then 16 years old daughter down from our friend's home in Causeway bay at 11 p.m. and all the shops were open. Even at 1 a.m. many of the shops remained open and lots of people actually shopping.

Then when we were in Singapore Chinatown ("eqivalent to Causeway Bay), the roadside stores were mainly closed at 8:30 p.m. after our supper in the hawker centre. Wow what a contast!

Well they have no initiative to increase the pay of Singaporeans .
And if they still insist on hiring cheap FTs as solution .
We have to give them a good Ghost town to safeguard ourselves .

This is not any big formal documentary project nor investigative journalism here. It is a personal video blogging, about what I saw what I witness and added with comments, it is just part of my daily life, when I have encountered something that worth my effort to pull out camera to record, I just did it and blog it. It is alike STOMP or Tweeter.

I wouldn't shortlist a series of time and places and deliberately set out to film these. It just happened that I was there, I saw these, I recorded.

It is something for those who had no idea about what is going on, to see and correct their wrong expectation of things (in this case the PROSPERING 15% Economic Growth and Rich Singaporeans shopping and buying the whole world for CNY). Something to show to the people who had been wrongly impressed by famiLEE LEEgime propaganda.

I had lived here for about 50 yrs now and I know what were here in SGP during the past CNYs and I know what we have lost under LEEgime rules. In the past, Chinatown & Albert St areas would be heavily crowded and jam packed by shoppers in 2-3 weeks before CNY regardless of weather. The markets sells day night dusk dawn 24hrs before CNY. Sellers rotated and took shifts, slept below their stalls while their brothers conduct busy business on the stall, and switch turns to rest.

I visited classmates during CNY whose family run this sort of business, they lost weight doing these CNY business due to lack of rest, we wanted to take these friends out to CNY movies, but their were half-dead like after weeks of In-Camp-Trainings. They made good money during CNY, family got richer each year.

No more these days! Thanks to LEEgime!

One guy who lives in Tampines told me that this Giant would be fully pack and the whole area jammed daily this week, and one Saturday he saw it himself passing there. However this expectation is proven to be untrue today, when I personally went to eat and shop there. Less than usual crowd even when no rain. COURTS & IKEA also not busy nor crowded today.

Further, I can tell you all that hair saloons are not doing well in heartland.

Men and women are queuing up to get CNY hair-cut hair-do, most people I saw on the streets the last few days have not gotten any CNY hair-cut / perm etc.

It used to be that barbers and saloons got long queue and people wait until outside and some neighbors (very friendly and good relationship in the old days) negotiate to exchange their queue positions, no Kiasu!

It used to be that each dad will bring few boys to queue at the barber, and even the wait was fun for the kids, it was like a special ritual for CNY. Kids will talk and plan at barber on how to play during CNY, and they cross checked with each friends what sort of fire crackers and fire works had been purchased by their fathers. Fire crackers were hang down from 4-5th floors of buildings and lighted up from ground floor, all the way up, then huge bang at the final spot.

Sound of fire crackers will never stop throughout the night. Road surfaces were covered up by red paper chips from crackers, everywhere.

Gone are these good old days!

I was passing by some nurseries .
They have rows and rows of citrus

There are like hundreds and hundreds .

I wonder which nursery will burn their stock first ?

Uncle Yap:

Perhaps I should address you as cousin Yap as I am 55 and you are 50.

You mentioned that in the past Chinatown was jam packed 2 weeks before Chinese New Year. Well your remark makes me flash back in the mid 1960s when I went with my parents to Chinatown.......it need not be Chinese New Year....every night it was jam packed.

Maybe at that time the streets were narrower and that's why it was jam, but then I remember there was life in Chinatown......everyone spoke Cantonese.

The last time I was there in Singapore Chinatown, in Aug 2008, the whole atmosphere was gone.....no more those Cantonese noise and music but I heart constantly the PRC whores calling out and chating with old fart like me....some even older in their early 70s.

Then as I said, the roadside stalls along Sago lane (if I get it right) simply closed and by 10 p.m. it's all closed.....compare to Causeway Bay in Hong Kong which opens past mid-night.

The pasa malam stores in Singapore are simply "too organized"....even the tents and covers are so standardized....all the same. Go over to JB or Ipoh and you can see each stall has it's own way to built the shelters....a kind of creativity.

Uncle Yap, you do not need to tell average Singaporeans how they are screwed by the old fart Lee Kuan Yew....they know...especially when they get hospitalized or wait in the poly clinic and need to pay all those fees + GST and what's more those doctors can be mean.

The replacements of true-blue Singaporeans by FT are real.

Dragon sissy cancer Loong's $10,000 per day pay is real.

As I say, if this coming erection, Singaporeans still do not vote at least 10 to 12 opposition members to paLEEment, then the whole Singapore deserves to be screwed big time by old fart and his sissy son and later his grandson from MIT. If PAP can even win ALL the seats, then you and Dr. Chee and all opposition sould just pack up and leave Singapore and let them die.......all true-blue Singaporeans should just immigrate if they can.

Give up? Yes. This is just a condemn case if Singaporeans do not vote more than 10 to 12 oppositions into parLEEment. What hope is left?

You guys have already done enough...Dr. Chee bankrupt, you went to jail so many times, John Tan lost his job, Seelan went to jail....and yet Singaporeans do not appreciate the effort and guts you guys put it and still think you guys are confrontational!

Who is more confrontational......just peacefully sell political magazine and make some speaches on the roadside and protest peacefully or the PAP sending ISD knocking at opposition members doors at home at 3 a.m.!?

How can anyone stomach such bullies from a 88 year old fart!?

Come on, enough is enough!

At the rate it is going, in 15 to 20 years time, Singapore will have 8 million people and of these less than 2 million will be true-blue Singaporeans like you and Dr. Chee. You will be in your 70s by then. The frightening thing is that old fat Lee Kuan yew might still be alive!

My yap,

most of the population in SG are now FTs, so now long weekend, many have gone home, especially the PRC ones, therefore what you see is quite true (weather is wet as well)...also many locals have gone overseas due to the long weekend...this tallies with the 50K plus "registered" voters...

Hi ex-singaporean!

I know what you meant when you mentioned HK, I know the Causeway Bay & Wan Zai area, my HK-ex used to live there and her sister had a shop there. There it would be easy to get a supper / meal anytime at night, markets sell fish and live chicken 24hrs. In 尖沙嘴 & 尖东 area even better, lots of my favorite food sold there.

In HK actually the unlicensed hawkers sold the best food! I remember I got one of the most delicious home-cooked Canton Congee 蚝士粥 from a make-shift stall outside a 7-Eleven shop. People just sold some extra that were cooked at home packed in foam cups to make extra family income, tasted so good. Wah-Piang! Yum-Yum!

What you mentioned was also a heritage lost due to LEEgime policy on our dialect culture.

CNY culture is a whole heritage bankruptcy murdered by famiLEE LEEgime! CNY was such and exciting and fascinating season in SG, that at most other parts of the whole year we will anticipate CNY. e.g. during mid-Autumn 中秋 we will compare the fun we had during CNY and we all missed CNY. Our good times will never come back unless LEEgime is gone.

In the past, these cultural places are popular and have a positive atmosphere 人气, these days 人气 is gone, and in Orchard etc you will find 鬼气冲天! That is so different from 人气. Evil can be felt very thick in the air.:(

Singapore had already been sold to FT by famiLEE LEEgime.

The remaining Singaporeans mostly live like corpses here.:(

You see CNY and they are so lack of purchasing power, there is so lack of signs of live, no cultural features and activities seen. All you can finds is that lame plastic CB 财神 crap, so lame. I am sicken by it. Look at this video:

look like the whole island is deserted....many FTs gone home....many singaporeans gone out ....many singaporeans married to FTs also flew out....

left with uncles and aunties...ah peks and ah sohs.....where got so much money to buy things....

many have bought their lny goodies from JB...from Bangkok....and even from Jakarta....so the singaporean stall holders can only swipe mosquitoes...and paying the high rentals for their stalls........sad man!!!!.....and the RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this year's CNY is rather subdued. The rain makes it worse. I sure wouldn't like to be a stallholder renting a space. Sure lose $$$!

Uncle Yap, I notice most of the videos shot in the day. Would it change in the evening?

I was busy sprucing my house and buying groceries getting ready for the CNY, and there is a lot of crowd.

Friday was at GIANT
Sat was at IKEA and Courts, sell until no stock
Sun was at IKEA, got to buy limited stock which they carried over from warehouse.
Mon was at IKEA, GIANT, to get more.

No crowd? So crowded still say no crowd.

You must understand SDP style. Got crowd, go somewhere else look for spot with no crowd then take video. E.g. if Lim Chee Guan got 1,000 people waiting, and Mei Zhen Xiang got 800 people waiting, he will take a picture of the poor vendor trying to see his bootleg Mei Zhen Xiang with only 2-3 customers.

Don't be fooled by the SDP. I'ts run by a postage thief. And this is the special "SDP Protocol' taking the videos you know.
