A RECORD number of 1,618 Singaporeans abroad have registered as overseas voters for the next general election - but the number is expected to grow.
This is because eligible Singaporeans living, working or studying overseas can still register with the Elections Department, or at one of nine Singapore missions abroad, until the writ for an election is issued.
The next election must be held by February next year, but there has been increasing speculation that it could take place in the second quarter of this year.
The figure of 1,618 already surpasses the 1,017 who registered to vote in the May 2006 election - the first time that overseas voting was introduced.
The Elections Department disclosed the figure yesterday, a day after closing the registers of electors for the 14 group representation constituencies and nine single-seat constituencies.
The registers - which list the names of all citizens aged 21 and above who are qualified to be voters as of Jan 1 this year - had been open for inspection for a two-week period from Jan 14.
