Cod liver oil cheaper, doesn't need refrigeration.

Fish oil more expensive, needs refrigeration.

Cod liver oil more expensive because it comes from a single source?

Fish oil cheaper because any rojak fish can squeeze out oil, not to mention got 加料?

=======================================================

There are many people the world over, who have either fish oil or cod liver oil as a part of their daily food consumption. However, now, with the fish oil vs cod liver oil debate, people are in a fix and want to know, which of the two is better for health and should be taken. Both these oils contain beneficial elements for the human body. It will depend on the dietary habit and lifestyle of the person, which oil should be taken by that person.

Fish Oil Versus Cod Liver Oil
We will go deep into the fish oil vs cod liver oil debate, but before that, we must see what is it that is common to both these oils. Both fish oil and cod liver oil are rich in heart healthy omega 3 essential fatty acids. These are polyunsaturated fatty acids and they are necessary to counter the level of omega 6 fats in the body. According to a study, most Americans have dangerously high levels of omega 6. Increasing the consumption of omega 3 is helpful in reducing the harmful fats from the body. Click here to read more on the beneficial effects of fish oil on the heart.

Cod Liver Oil
Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin A and vitamin D along with the omega 3 essential fatty acids. Due to certain cod liver oil benefits, it is recommended to take this oil in winters, when the person is does not get sufficient amount of vitamin D from the sun. It is therefore also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’. If cod liver oil is taken in summers by people living in the Northern United States and Canada, there are chances of toxicity from excess accumulation of vitamin D from the sun, along with the dietary sources, vitamin supplements and cod liver oil. At the same time, if the person lives in the southern states of United States, it is recommended, that they avoid using cod liver oil all year around.

Fish Oil
Fish oil can be beneficial as a dietary supplement for everyone above the age of four and who have sufficient exposure to sunlight. Fish oil is rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids, however unlike cod liver oil it does not contain vitamin D. Vitamin D is present in the liver of the fish and fish oil that is made from the whole body of the fish, contains insignificant quantities of vitamin D in it. Fish oil is recommended for people who get lot of sun exposure and/or who eat a lot of fish, which are naturally rich in vitamin D, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. At the same time, if the person lives in an area, where the weather is warm all around the year and the skin is exposed to the sun, he should consume fish oil as against cod liver oil. Women, who are pregnant or are nursing during the summer months, should consume fish oil and not cod liver oil.

From the fish oil vs cod liver oil debate, the conclusion that was drawn is that cod liver oil should be taken by those, who stay far away from the equator and are not adequately exposed to sunlight. There are people, who are allergic to sunlight, and hence do not step out in the sun. They may therefore be prone to a vitamin D deficiency. Such people are recommended to take cod liver oil. If you are going to start of with either cod liver oil or fish oil, you may want to consult your health care professional. If blood tests are recommended, it is good to get the blood tests done. In case the blood tests show the level of vitamin D to be greater than 50 ng/ml, you will be advised against taking cod liver oil.

Salmon is from the river & not from the polluted seas. However even the rivers are getting polluted. So people are turning to krill for their omega 3 as krill are less likely to be polluted as they eat plankton.

I've started using cold pressed oils from plant sources because I'm concerned with pollution & I'm taling at least 4 table spoons of oil per day. Been using it for a short time but already seeing good results.

Good oils should require refigeration after opening to preserve it's benefits. Oils that don't need refrigeration mean that they contain preservatives which I don't think is healthy.

Thanks. Do you swallow the capsule like a pill with water, keep it in your mouth till it melts naturally, or bite and chew it?

With fish oil I swallow the capsules. If I wanted it to melt in the mouth I would have stuck with the liquid form which is suppose to be better absorbed

Many people don't like the taste of fish oil & the fishy burping that somethimes happens :) I stopped taking the liquid form of fish oil & because I found it yucky.

I find cold press oils more palatable. I have no problems taking flaxseed oil like Barleans straight from the bottle:
http://www.iherb.com/Barlean-s-Highest-Lignan-Flax-Oil-16-oz-473-ml/3539?at=0

However I've settled on the Udo brand because of it's reputation & because the oils are from different sources. It is a more balanced product providing Omega 3,6 & 9 & in the future I will being taking 2 of the following Udo products:

You can visit the Udo website to find out more:

They do have capsule forms but the liquid form is easier for me to take in large amounts.

I'm not your normal consumer, I'm trying to recover from a heart/diabetes & am taking the recommended dose of 1 table spoon per 50 lbs of body weight.

I have 2 questions to ask about fish oils.

1. Would it be better and perhaps more economical to try and eat oily fish for meals instead of buying the capsules, which can be quite expensive and tasteless?
Hence instead of eating a capsule a day, try and have oily fish at least 4 or 5 times a week.

2. What are the types of fish which give good and sufficient oil?
Salmon is one of them, what about batang or mackerel which is commonly used in fish soup?

Thanks.

Fish oil is supplement quite cheap if you get them from outside of Spore e.g. Malaysia, USA. Look at some examples of pricing:
http://www.iherb.com/search?kw=omega 3

Even if you eat fish there is no guarantee you are getting enough fish oils. There's the variance in quality even with salmon there is a difference between wild salmon vs farmed salmon, as well as how it's prepared e.g. how long you cook, whether you steam or fry , etc.

Fact is few Sporeans eat properly & if you want to ensure you get X amount of a nutrient, you have to supplement.

I usually chew cod liver oil capsules like candies. :D

I don't like the emulsion type usually fed to babies.

Correction, according to Udo it's better to eat fish rather than take fish oil, I quote:

http://www.udoerasmus.com/FAQ/FAQ4_en.htm

3. High fat, cold water fish such as sardines, salmon, trout, herring, and mackerel contain n-3 and n-6 derivatives. Eating fish is preferable to using fish oil capsules, due to contamination of fish oils with mercury, pesticides, and PCBs, and due to damage done to fish oils during processing.

I've been swallowing alot of pills everyday day for a number of years now. I'm getting tired of it :(

So I'm turning to liquids or multi-product pills to reduce what I have to swallow. However I there are some things that I won't take like those emulsions:)

What are the beneficial effects of chicken essence (and others)? It's supposely invented for British sailors but for many years more popular in the east. It's quite expensive, even untaxed, more expensive than alcohol.

Johnny, if I may ask, beside medication and health supplement, what's your daily diet like now?

Yucks!...guess that is one man's meat another man's poison...I will throw up whatever I had eaten before & now! How are going to kiss your lovelies with your mouth smelling like fish & tasting like one. As for emulsion, I will run for the 'hills' if you open a bottle in front of me, just hate that stuff!.:p

Chicken soup is supposedly good but not with the oil & so forth, have been taking chicken essence since young, mostly Brands. It does help, when I am feeling weak & sleepy & I like the taste. It is heaty & some years back there was this news that they contain caramel also in small percentage.

I have always wondered whats the difference we boil a whole chicken in water, & drink the soup, filtering the oil etc..is it the same as Essence of Chicken?.

You must be referring to the famous Brands essence of chicken. Brand's has expanded their product range now includes berry, prunes,....You're right in that it's very expensive.

My health needs wouldn't be satisfied with an expensive essence of chicken.
I think it's better to invest in the basics, such as a good cold press oil which is a necessity rather than a luxury.

I do invest in freeze dried products which have proven health benefits such as Acai & Acai/Pomegranate/Beet/grape seed formulas. These products do contain organic ingredients are scientifically based & are affordable:

http://www.iherb.com/Madre-Labs-Acai-Heart-6-35-oz-180-g/16988?at=0

I spend alot of time going through iHerbs website & am still amazed at the things available there
