Usher in the new year at Serangoon Gardens
SINGAPORE: More than 20,000 people are expected at Serangoon Gardens to usher in the new year on December 31.
The street party, which caters to the 16,500 households in the area, was first held 11 years ago to usher in the millennium.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was the guest-of-honour at the last party, will again grace this year's event.
"The objective of the event is to allow residents to count down to the new year in their own backyard. As with the last swing, we are expecting to see people coming out in their pyjamas, with their grandparents, their grandchildren," said Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, MP for Aljunied GRC and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.
She was speaking to the media after inspecting preparations for the party, which costs half a million dollars to organise.
The main action will take place on a stage set up at the Serangoon Gardens Circus.
Besides MediaCorp artistes, residents will also be putting up performances.
Participants will also shake their way into the Singapore Book of Records, by learning the steps to the "Papaya Dance".
Roads leading to the circus will be closed off to traffic from 4pm on December 31 till 1am the following day.
To keep the roads clear of vehicles, residents have been given permits to park in nearby schools.
When asked if it was difficult explaining to residents the need for road closures, Mrs Lim said the main thing is to provide information.
She added that information kits have been handed out and signboards put up informing residents about the closures.
Mrs Lim was also asked why the Prime Minister chose to attend the Serangoon Gardens party, out of more than 50 heartland events organised this year, and if it is a show of support for the People's Action Party MPs ahead of the next General Election.
She said that Prime Minister Lee was the guest-of-honour at the last swing event at Serangoon Gardens.
And, as some of his constituents from Ang Mo Kio are likely to attend this year's Serangoon Gardens party, an invitation was extended to Prime Minister Lee, said Mrs Lim.
She dismissed talk of a "show of support" ahead of the next General Election, adding that wherever Prime Minister Lee goes, he is showing support for the local area and it is the same anywhere else.
On whether Serangoon Gardens will be a single member constituency at the next General Election, Mrs Lim told reporters to wait for the release of the Electoral Boundaries Report to find out.
