Ho Bee Media CEO collapses, dies on holiday in Rome

PROMINENT Singaporean businessman Chua Pin Chong died suddenly in Rome on Sunday morning, just before he was due to board a plane to come home.

Mr Chua, the youngest brother of Mr Chua Thian Poh, president of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, had been on a 10-day holiday in Europe with his wife and four children.

He was chief executive officer of Ho Bee Media and Ho Bee Print, which are subsidiaries of the Ho Bee group of companies.

His older brother, Mr Chua Thian Poh, is chairman and chief executive of the group. When contacted, Mr Chua Thian Poh would say only that the family was doing 'okay'.

The Straits Times understands that the younger Mr Chua, 50, felt uncomfortable while checking in for his flight.

An ambulance was called, but he died later in hospital.

The family, including three teenagers and a nine-year-old, were supposed to have returned from their holiday on Monday.

The Ho Bee Group's public relations general manager, Ms Caroline Ee-Lee, acting as spokesman for the family, said: 'The family (members) are very shocked and sad. They are very close and have regular gatherings.'

She added there had been no indication that Mr Chua was suffering from any health problems.

Evening daily Lianhe Wanbao said that he had complained of tightness in the chest before the trip, but had gone for a medical screening and was given the all-clear.

His wife informed the family of his death on Sunday night.

One of his brothers flew to Rome to help with the arrangements. His body will return on Saturday, which would also have been his 51st birthday.

Mr Chua Thian Poh, who was on holiday in Japan, cut short his trip and arrived home yesterday morning to be with the family.
