Who are your enemy and who are your friend?

The defence spending in Singapore increased from $8,622 million in 2004 to $11,455 million in 2010. During the same period, the GST in Singapore increased from 5% in 2004 to 7% in 2007. No doubt that a strong defence is necessary for Singapore since we are living in a small state. However, are the high defence spending over the years due to the procurement of weapons and equipments necessary for the defence of Singapore or are they due to the high manpower cost because of the high salary of the SAF regulars?

The average salary in the civilian sector below was obtained from a local job website and the entry salary of a SAF regular was obtained from MINDEF recruitment website. A comparison was made between the average salary of a professional in the civilian sector and the salary scale of a new SAF regular. The information below revealed that a civilian and NSman in the private sector would take many years of experience before he can get to the same salary of a fresh graduate who newly joined the SAF as a regular.
Despite the frequent claims that because military career are more demanding and hence, SAF regulars has to be pay higher, how often does a SAF regular go outfield for exercises? Throughout the entire career of a SAF regular, a regular only serve in the combat appointment for a couple of years and spend most of his career in office environment, similar to his NSman counterpart. If the argument for a high salary for the SAF regulars is because of the short military career, they have already been compensated with a huge retirement savings upon their retirement age at 50 under the SAVER Scheme implemented by MINDEF in 1998. Moreover, for the Intelligence Officer, the retirement age has already been extended to 60 under the MDES scheme announced by MINDEF last year.

Despite the $9000 to be given to the NSman under the National Service Recognition Award, it does not sufficiently compensate the sacrifices of the NSman in contributing to the defence of Singapore. Moreover, the Singapre citizens and Nsman has to compete with foreign talents in the job market and also incur the displeasure of his immediate superior who lose his employee for 2 weeks for ICT, which will affect his career, a SAF regular do not need to do so. Hence, the salary of the SAF regulars should be reduce so as to reduce the defence spending and GST, and the burden of Singaporeans, who have to pay for a high GST becos of the high salary of the SAF regulars. Moreover, the deterrence value of the SAF is based on the commitment of the citizens and NSmen to the defence of Singapore, since the bulk of the manpower resources consist of NSmen.
Instead of using high salary to attract people to join the SAF as a regular, MINDEF should reduce the pay of the SAF regulars, starting from the top brass to the lowest rank, and educate the SAF regulars to join the SAF based on a sense of duty, honour and country, so as to lead the NSFs and NSman by example. If the rationale to give high pay to the SAF regulars is to attract talent, MINDEF had adopted a wrong policy, as talents are people with a passion for his calling and persevere in his duty, regardless of what he might face. Love involves sacrifices, just like the NSmen who risk loses his job in responding to the calling to defend the country. Otherwise, who are Singaporeans defending in serving National Service? Our family, jobs and salary which are threatened and suppressed by the influx of foreign talents, and the high cost of living in Singapore? Or the jobs of the foreign talents and the SAF regulars? The SAF regulars train the citizen soldiers to defend the country and fight their enemy. However, who are their enemy and who are their friend?

I don't mind paying for my CO's salary if I'm able to siam reservist for good.

Money comes from the people effortlessly. Thus there is no need for the govt to worry whether it is overspend. If in deficit again, they will break the people wallet, again, via GST hike, utlities hike, more ERP and whatever craps they can come up with to suck us dry. Does that further explains why Singaporeans are the most hardworking people and yet the poorest. 20% of populations now live in poverty to feed the general up there, who will at anytime carry their master instruction in event of freak election result. Leong Sze Hian will have more to share about negative statistics that is not reported in our main stream media.

Hello, I was (past tense) regular too. No choice. No money that time. Needed the full salary. But I did my job, owed nobody any apology.

The pay levels are not excessively high. Someone with a degree and 15 years experience shld get more than $5000. Nothing shocking.

Why can't a graduate earn more than $3500? I think it's reasonable.

Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

You do want yr children to get paid well, don't you?

Equalisation not qualified to serve NS or sign on lah. Talk cock only.

You think what? Everybody can serve NS or sign on? Only the good ones can serve NS and the best ones can sign on. Equalisation lao kok kok only dickie functioning for gals and liver functioning for drinkies, offer free also government doesn't want him. Drop dead halfway still must pay for his funeral, not a wise way to spend taxpayers' money.

of course they are well paid.

they primary function is to command the troops to machine gun the peasants if they dare to revolt against PAP.

of course secondary function is defend FT jobs.

Wrong already. Regular primary function is to make sure NSmen don't go AWOL (arrest them, lock them up in DB and beat them up or knock some sense into their heads if necessary). Secondary function is to make sure if there's war, NSmen go die first.

I think the question here is, is there a need for such a huge budget on defense. How do they justify highly paid SAF regulars not knowing who or what are they defending against.

what about protests, strikes and anarchy ?

if we see the bigger picture, the SAF/ SPF/ SCDF no doubt is necessary to some minor extent, the major intention is to keep good-for-nothings off the street. the uniformed corps r put in place so they can dump the useless & scholars in the same place. feed them well, so they have no reasons to create rukus in society.

if u look across the board, easily 60% of the regulars (or more) have pathetic qualifications, they will not be able to secure a proper job in the real world. so they sign their lives away to the corps. these bunch of ppl also known as farmers.

another 20-30% are average people who thought they hold a dream job, having fun in the sun, going thru the same old shit day after day, year after year. but the drop out rate is quite high. along the way, many took the gratuity & kissed the corps goodbye. also classified as farmers

remaining 10-20% are bookworms known as scholars who excel in academics, but know very little/ nothing about the applications of systems or policies. the uniformed corps made up of farmers is perfect platform for the scholars to exercise their prowess & test out their ideals. then, in time to come, when they rise through the ranks & need to make way for the next scholar in line, they get transfered to revenue arms to serve vested interests (repay scholarship $$$)

To bluntly put it-most are defenders for the MIW in time of voting! It's justified in the sense like "vote for me n get what u deserve"! Hahaha...greasing each other palms wld say!
