Two foreign workers built this new series of letterboxes at Cassia Crescent out of what appears to be styrofoam covered with a layer of grey concrete. STOMPer ric is concerned about how safe this material is.

In an email today (Sep 28) he explained his concerns:

"This place is Block 54 Cassia Crescent.

"For certain reasons, our Town Council decided to upgrade the letterboxes of this old flat.

"Look at the material they used. The outside looks great but the inside is filled with styrofoam. It was constructed by two foreign workers, and took months to reach the final stage.

"How safe is this upgrade for a mature neighbourhood with many old people as well as young children?

"Do we need to have people injured before the authority stops this act of short-changing citizens?"

OH my please do a little bit of study before commenting

unless you want your letter box to be made of iron....

Why because iron got the same expandsion rate with concrete. If the styrofoam is not there to filled the gap or the concrete just place to top of the aluminium made box I can tell you the the children and the old folk and ecen you will be hurt by the crack falling concrete in a few month time.

Why it is the difference of expandsion rate.

Let you know a bit more they will even use styrofoam in building your home.

Goto the net and search using styrofoam you your find there are so many different kind and grade of styrofoam to be used in any form of application.

Yea, yea with all those coefficient of expansion etc. Then you can see they shalve rubbish in between the those newer (pasr 15 years) HDB walls separating the rooms and apartments. Just look what's inside the walls the next time you do a renovation or when yohammer a 5 inches nail into the wall. After the first 2 inches, the nail just penetrate into the wall with just your finger. Try it.

So basically Singaporeans are now living in rubbish and drink urine and shit water call Newater.

HDB is all about quality :)

They use vinyl piping, windows known for falling off, concrete spalding problems,... Obviously designed to cut costs & to be upgraded

If units were cheap many wouldn't be complaining but you are paying a small fortune for a limited lease.

You're right about expansion differentials. However the proper material to use for cushioning is rubber, not styrofoam. The type of raw dried rubber that has turned black, like tyre rubber.

Then, it's only necessitated in a horizontally restricted platform, e.g. pavement, playground etc. where expansion by temperature change has to be absorbed by cushioning to prevent ground cracks. In vertical structures like flats and mailboxes, there's no need, there's enough airspace to absorb the changes in expansion and contraction.

Those no direct facing any sunlight do not need any cushion. Mail box i velow void deck.

Actually, if you hack down your wall, don't be surprised to find old newspaper stuffings in the hollows.
