Native Singaporeans may now make up only about 50 percent of the population

Native Singaporeans born and bred in Singapore may only make up 50 percent of Singapore’s population according to the latest data released by the Singapore Department of Statistics.

As of June 2010, there were 3.23 million Singapore citizens and 540,000 permanent residents out of a population of 5.08 million people.

Of the 3.23 million citizens, the number which are not born in Singapore is not revealed. About 20,000 foreigners were given Singapore citizenships yearly on average over the last five years.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Mr Wong Kan Seng revealed in Parliament in July this year that Singapore requires 20,000 new citizens a year to replace Singapore’s falling population.

Assuming that there are currently 100,000 new citizens in Singapore (20,000 yearly for the last five years) and we are already using the lower limit, this means that new citizens, PRs and foreigners now constitute 49 percent of Singapore’s population.

[0.54 (PR in mil) + 0.1(new citizens) + 5.08(total) - 3.23(citizens)/5.08 x 100% = 49%]
