Actually Japanese papers have more content but far less advertising - hence the higher cost. The editorial content in ST is less than one article a page - the 'national' paper comprises mostly advertising.

It is all abt value for money. When our newspaper professional journalism standard has consistently been independently rated as among the world's lowest ...currently 154th lowest ranking (and continuing to drop), then the increase is no doubt a ransom. Why is this a ransom ? Because they are granted monopoly as the only mainstream English national newspaper in Singapore. So no competition ! Can do what they like. Don't like huh...then don't read my 154th ranking newspaper !!!!

I guess it is also a case of like public transport (MRT, SBS Transit) etc...can easily charge recent exorbitant increases....why not me jumping on the band wagon as well........ just give a simple and stupid reason (like materials and oil price increases) to fool all the Singaporeans folks (they will as usual complain, complain, but will eventually accept this).

Or even if you compare a conservative paper like The Australian to ST, Murdoch's The Australian is still way better.

Let's put it in this way: Either way, whether an overseas one is liberal or conservative, as long as the country practices free speech, the newspaper(s) are inevitably better than Singapore's.
