Han culture we must be proud of...

If I remembered correctly, Okinawans never considered themselves as Japanese. They have a different dialect and even their own culture. The real native Japanese were the Ainu people, who of course, were marginalized. I hate to admit it, but a Japanese civilization that is much younger than a 5000-year-old Chinese civilization, is doing much better now.

Okinawa was known as Ryukyu. It's relation to Japan was like Singapore to Malaysia. It was hotly contested by Korea and Japan during Ming Dynasty era. Ming backed Korea and held status quo of ambiguity of sovereignty. However later Ming decided to retreat from naval warfare and Korea lost Ryukyu to Japan, then renamed in Japanese as Okinawa.

I was fortunate enough to watch the Japanese TV series Ryukyu No Kaze 琉球の風 when I was living in San Francisco. I don't think it was ever shown on Singapore TV and I couldn't find any DVD of it. Great stuff.

The series is about the history of Okinawa?

The series is about the history of Okinawa?

Yeah. The fight between Japan and Korea over Okinawa (Ryukyu) eventally led to the Japanese invasion of Korea and taking the whole Korea over as colony. That success led to more ambition like fighting Russia and China, gaining Kuerile Islands, Taiwan and Manchuria. That success led to even more ambition fighting USA and British Empire. It's all in the history.

think it's like this.

In 1600, Japan Sengoku leaders wanted Ryūkyū Kingdom that ruled Okinawa to support the invasion of Korea, then a tribute state of Ming Dynasty. The kingdom refused to take part in the military conquests. Ryūkyū remained an tribute state to Japan and Ming/Qing for next 250 years. Japan annexation of Okinawa happened during Meiji Restoration (1879)

Japan modernized their armies and navy during Meiji period. In 1870s, they targeted Korea for their imperialist expansion. In 1904, Japan and Soviet Union had secret agreements to halve Korea into their respective sphere of influence. Japan victory in 1905 Russo-Japanese war resulted in Russians quietly giving up their Korea claims. In 1910, Japan effectively annexed Korea.

Think your details are right. :)

It's the resources. The scenery landscapes, the number of people and horses they have. When left with a province-sized island like Taiwan or a city-sized territority like HK, none of those could be available.

As for the quality of actors, we all have seen it from Romance Of Three Kingdoms, Yongzheng Dynasty etc. PRC has top quality actors second to none especially when acting in history dramas. They don't even speak like modern irritating PRCs we see and hear in Singapore. They not only can act well in their roles and they can speak Chinese in a classical accent soothing to all who understand Chinese.

It goes back to the question why such great resources are required to re-enact Chinese history. Because Chinese history is such so grand.

serious chinese history so grand coming from the likes of you? then again i knew there were concessions your other posts would insult chinese.

The beauty of our Han Chinese culture also can be seen here..

Japanese are your siblings? Are you a comfort woman's child?

China latest TV series, 大明宫词 Daming Palace. One of the best i can proudly say so.Just by seeing those Han clothing and the rich culture we Chinese have, really make me proud to be a Chinese.
Hope China can produce more of these kind of television programs in the future!!! :) :) :)

nothing to be proud of. it's a tv drama about millions of minions serving the whim and fancy of one dynastic family. whatever the emperor and empress says is gold and must be obeyed and followed thru'. otherwise, heads will roll. sounds familiar? all the great hairdo's, grand palaces, classic speeches, and ornate costumes are just superficial cosmetics covering up the crap that is inherent in a decrepit system of enslavement and oppression.

Good Chinese culture movie better then Singapore production.

China has a long grand history, but not perfect, also blighted with some spells of dark ages. I face up to both as an ethnic Chinese. If you only want to hear the good stuff, go tune in to Gold FM 90.5. You remind me of SPH and Mediacorp, all that PAP did and does must be good.

What insult? How insulted? Please elaborate and substantiate if you care to. I don't mind if you don't answer this question if you don't wish to.

Japan might have been a superpower if not for WWII.

This i agree.China history and culture is rich.Invented the gun powder and Japan even adopted some of the Chinese language wordings. And the Japanese love the Romance Of The Three Kingdom alot.
Even the Korean national flag are design with our Chinese Ba Kua logo.

The Japanese took the wrong turn with the Tanaka petition to their Emperor (equivalent to a national doctrine). They gained parts of Machuria through WW1 and wanted the whole of Manchuria as Manchukuo as a Japanese protectorate. The last Qing Emperor Puyi was involved in that, tempted with restoration of some remnants of the Manchu Qing Dynasty since there was no way ROC would allow that.

The Tanaka doctrine didn't end with Manchukuo, it stated that Manchukuo would be the base from which Japan could conquer the whole of China and only the conquest of China would ensure security of Japan forever.

Not all Japanese politicans then subscribed to that doctrine. However, most of them too vocal against it were summarily assassinated, ninja style, though with pistols and bullets instead of swords and darts.

The Japanese right-wing back then were frightening. Anybody who disagree with them is seen as a traitor and has to be erased.

Chinese first invented compass, paper, printing and gunpowder.

Chinese invented own writing system independently without copying from elsewhere. Though not the first, Sumeria, Mesopotamia and Egypt had invented their writing systems earlier but without reference and connection. Greek was first in Europe and the idea for the now practically universally used Roman Alphabet was also derived from Greek, not really original.

Wah...our resident Sinologist clearly leaving his tracks in this thread. ;)

Let me throw in my 2 cents' worth.

Taoism, a philosophy of life, is truly something we should be proud of and adhere to.

The readings of Laozi, Zhuangzi and the Yi Jing were classics that transcend time and space.

It was said that to fully appreciate the classics, one should start with Mencius then Confucius, and lastly Lao-Zhuang.

Mencius was meant for the masses, then Confucius for the ruling class and lastly Lao-Zhuang for the more spiritually-aspiring class, well, so to speak, much like the Maslow hierarchy of needs.

Japan might have been a superpower if not for WWII.

World War 2, in both east and west, was a "geopolitical conspiracy" and inducements by British, American, French and Soviet Union. US/British wanted Japan to prevent China rise and counter Soviet Union. Stalin tried to thwart Anglo-American attempts at using Japan against USSR by provoking a war between China and Japan. Comintern agents colluded with chinese communists and japanese spies for GRU operations in northern China and Manchuria which finally resulted in Marco Polo Bridge incident.

millions of yellow peoples fought and perished in WW2 because of western imperialists battle for supremacy. This didn't stop after WW2. The chinese civil war was a squeal to the sino-japanese war and the Korean war was an extension of the chinese civil war, all because of those chao chee bye Ang Mohs.
