SINGAPORE: It will cost the government S$1 billion to upgrade the train signalling system to increase capacity and reduce waiting time for commuters.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong revealed this at a dialogue session with more than 200 residents from the Marine Parade ward, which he takes care of.

The event is to gather feedback on the Prime Minister's National Day Rally.

SM Goh said Singapore today is grappling with the problems of success.

He said problems can be resolved rationally but noted that for every solution, there are consequences.

Citing overcrowding in trains, SM Goh said the problem is expected and can be addressed.

In this case, resources have to be put in place to upgrade the system.

The cost may not be passed down to commuters directly, but SM Goh pointed out that it has to be defrayed.

Similarly, there are consequences with measures introduced in the property sector.

SM Goh acknowledged the situation has resulted in many unhappy Singaporeans, and he sought to put things in perspective.

"Those who missed out, those who can't buy this, who can't upgrade and so on, so we are really feeling the unhappiness, question is was the policy good?

"Unhappiness, those who are happier, in total there's net happiness, there's no such thing called total happiness, don't believe in it. It's whether we create net happiness in all this," said SM Goh. - CNA/fa

I thought that SMRT is private company as PAP just said? Now need to spend 1b, it will cost government (aka tax payers') money? Profit = private company, Expenses = Government. And since it is a PRIVATE COMPANY'S business, then the defraying part has got nothing to do with the Government..

"If Singaporeans do not view SMRT as a private company, then it is a misconception on their part.

Mr Shanmugam explained: "If they do not see SMRT as a private company, then that is a misconception because it is a listed company, but it is private in the broad sense that it is not a government entity. It declares dividends which goes to the shareholders. "

See how he played with words of non committments: "may not" then use word of uncertainty "defrayed".....Whom to defray to and for how long and how much?

Can someone asked God how can upgrading a signalling system increase capacity and reduce waiting time?

And why it cost S$1 billion and not $5billion or $10 million?

Come on it is just signalling system...some software programming and timers and mornitoring system and manpower and Singapore's train system is small compare to London and NY. Why $1 billion that much and what self-guard that it would not go over like the YOG....3 times over.

And look at where, this mighty nation upteen times the size of Singapore is now? They are still sending their girls to Singapore to work as maids, and begging to be paid at least US$400 a month.

Re: Wooden Unhappy to Foot Cost of Unbridled FTrashisation. Vow to Make Sporns Pay Ba

SGD29bil from tax payers and they still want the commuters to pay for the up-grading?

The reason why it is so crowded in the first place is because of increase in demand. This should justify for increase in supply to cater for the demand. In basic conomic principle, there is not justification for fair increase because the increase in demand will mean increase in revenue to cover the cost.

GCT should retire as his brain is getting rusty, first he screw up the calculation on Potong Pasir reserve funds and now this? If he is anything, he is certainly not good in his maths.
