Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has donated S$250,000 to the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO).

The gift is part of Mr Lee's pledge three years ago to donate the increase in his salary to various charities for a period of five years.

Mr Lee, who is also patron of the SCO, will give the same amount to the orchestra over the next two years.

In a statement to the media, he said this will support a proposed Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Compositions.

The event will be held every three years, starting November 2011.

Mr Lee added Chinese orchestral music has a large following among Singaporeans and he hoped the competition will stimulate composers to come up with refreshing repertoires.

Mr Lee has donated a total S$1.15 million this year.

They include an education endowment fund, and a range of community, grassroots, youth, arts and welfare organisations.

The education endowment fund supports students in special schools and those who have contributed to the community.

Over the past two years, Mr Lee put S$800,000 into this education endowment fund. He contributed a further S$300,000 to the fund this year.

He said: "I intend to continue building up this fund in the coming years."

Hope that he will not demand for another pay increase so that he will donate more.:D:D

This is really for show. What is $250,000 compare to the $3.8 miillion he is drawing?

The salary of ministers should be frozen and not increased in the first place!

Nothing compared to the many billions the PAP lost in record time.

Many people have given much more but they did not make a big hooha out of it. Why is LHL making so much noise?

You spastic maggot

have you donated 6.25% of your salary this year??????

:oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo:

Old man said he would give to charity when he won his case against those who "libeled" him. So does anyone know if he really gave to any charity

Considering that our dear PM hasn't got to pay any income tax, the so called 6.25% is peanuts when you consider the other sources of income he has.

In this case, how do we know the donation will go through once the election is over:confused: Our dear PM is a very busy man & you think anyone will dare to complain if he forgets his pledge

Donation comes from a sincere desire to help. Donation is not donation when LHL demanded a hefty pay increase and donate a small portion to charity.

Is SGD3.8mil the total annual income? Does it include all the benefits and allowances, e.g. paid meals, medical, transportation etc? Just a question as a curious citizen.

Ministers (including Prime) have to file and pay income taxes too. However, I agree that increasing salary (already astronomically high), then donate, that's no charity at all.
