Surgical procedure devised for Type 2 diabetes
Hyderabad, Aug 21.

A new procedure which requires surgical intervention through Ileal Transposition (or small intestinal switch) can effectively control Type 2 diabetes, a Brazilian surgeon claimed here today.

Dr. Aureo Ludovico de Paula said in an address to the first international conference and live workshop on this procedure along with his Indian counterpart Dr Surendra Ugale.

Ugale who is also the organising secretary of the workshop said, "the new research has shown that there are some intestinal hormones which have a great effect on the pancreas and insulin secretion especially in response to food intake.

Dr Paula has devised a laparoscopic operation which he claims is proving to be a cure for Type 2 diabetes."

Paula said, "the surgery can control diabetes without insulin, arrest the metabolic syndrome of the body organ deterioration, thus avoiding future diabetic complications."

The doctor who has performed 700 surgeries with 95 percent remissions said the operation involves a long segment of ilium (ending portion of small intestine) which is shifted to the upper small intestinal area, where food particles will reach it very soon on eating a meal.

This causes an immediate secretion of good hormone GLP-1 which acts on the B cells of pancreas to secrete insulin and control blood sugar. The fall out is a biochemical process that facilitates insulin secretion in the presence of undigested food and controls Type 2 diabetes, a metabolic disorder that is marked by the failure to absorb sugar and starch due to lack of the hormone insulin, Paula said.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In this disease, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore it.

Ugale explained that Type 2 Diabetes affects several organs. The solution therefore is to stimulate these hormones in lower intestine that in turn secrete GLP which in turn stimulates the pancreas to stimulate the insulin and get fresh beta cells.

He said patients who already have diabetes for ten years and using medication, and are suffering from five associated diseases are ideal candidates for this kind of surgical intervention which costs around USD 8000.

The surgery not only controls high blood pressure but also improves kidney cholesterol nerves reduces excess weight and also one need not take any medicines.

He also can eat normally post surgery including sweets. However, doctors insist that first of all in any patient they would advise lifestyle changes, exercise followed by medication.

Presently a centre in Mumbai and Hyderabad are performing this surgery.

A centre has also come up in Coimbatore. Over hundred doctors from all over the country and endocrinologists are participating in the two-day seminar beginning today.

U believe in Brazilian Medical Technology?

lol

Brazil is one of the most advanced scientific and technological nations in the world. Ranked in the top 10 bracket.

The facts are there - check out Scientific American , Nature, Astrophysics and other reputed Science journals for ample proof of this.

Type II diabetes effects people who are otherwise healthy people i.e. born non-diabetic.

It comes about when one is 'older' & obese. It can be reversed when such individuals adopt a healthier lifestyles & loose some weight.

Have to question if surgery is really the cure :)

Must take such claims with pinch of salt. The fact that operation takes place in India is highly suspicious. Ok, Indians are genetically predisposed to Diabetes. Why not try Singapore where we have large Indian Pop or , US or EU countries.

I really hope it works but ....

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

A while back there was this India guru that claims he has never eaten - ever.

Well,,,,cynicism and suspicion is one thing. In fact it is a cornerstone of all progress to doubt and question and seek answers.

So, one must find out the facts and then make the conclusion
There is a world wide symposium and conference being held on this and the news should be verifiable openly.

Mankind will never progress, based on the negative attitude and mind set-- " I AM SUSPICIOUS, THEREFORE I DO NOTHING. "

What about Type 1 Diabetics ?.
Is there any special diet to manage it effectively ?
Thanks

From my encounters, many Chinese uncles and aunties tend to misunderstand diabetes because the disease is called "sweet pee" in Chinese. They equate it to eat too much sweet things and therefore pee contains too much sugar. Pee containing high level of sugar can be a sign of diabetes, but not necessarily. Healthy people who eat and drink lots of sweet stuff can pee and shit sugary too.

The test is in the blood sugar level. Blood needs sugar, especially to clot and close open wounds. Without enough blood sugar level, open wounds can develop into gangrines and hence, amputation is common with diabetic patients.

Diabetes is caused by pancreas inability to process sugar intake into the blood circulation, therefore mostly peed out, nothing to do with sugar as if it's evil. No sugar, then can die.

Then why is it, doctors check the blood sugar level of their patients to see if it is too high and then prescribe immediate treatment to reduce the blood sugar level ?

Too little sugar or too much sugar that cause wounds not to heal and cause gangrene ?

Excessive sugar is no good too. That's why doctors check if need to reduce blood sugar. Excessive sugar thickens the blood and slows down the flow if body is not matched with exercise to burn it off. It'd be accumulated as converted fats.

Insufficient sugar causes wound not heel and gangrene. Instead of going into bloodstream or even accumulated as converted fats, all sugars consumed are pissed and passed off. That's diabetes.

welcome to the world of science, where 50 years later most of the staff that were taught at university (esp medical) were proven to be ineffective/wrong. the problem is......we do not know what are the wrong ones

From your earlier description you wrote out of context.

Yeah of course sugar isn't evil.

Yet to diabetics they need to watch the amount of sugary food they eat. Just like an obese guy has to watch his diet.

Yes of course. All must not overtake sugar generally. It'd accumulate and convert to the weight and spare tyre that you don't want, even if you don't have diabetes.

There's nothing out of context because you can't have no sugar in your blood too. The context is diabetes. It's a disease that causes (or caused by, whichever way you look at it) failure of the body to process sugar and retain it it bloodstream.

Got a relative who is a type 1 diabetic. She has to take insulin & must watch her diet carefully. Sorry don't know what kind of diet she has to follow, but whatever it is, it has kept her alive to her 70's.

From what I've read about type II , you have to avoid refined sugars & carbohydrates. Alot of the cakes & breads use white flour which is a no no for diabetics. Also should avoid white rice.

The diet of diabetics is similar to someone with a heart problem
Unprocessed Veggies with lots of fiber, fruits, beans, whole grain. Regular exercise , avoid smoking & drinking, avoid too much protein, avoid trans fats.

Diabetes is like that. Once you have it, it means body machinery not functioning properly already. Although your body needs a certain amount of sugar, you can't ingest and digest sugar. Doing so would cause even more damage to your body machinery that has already broken down in the first place. Insulin is not a sugar. It helps the bloodstream absorb sugar.

Diabetes is mostly Type 2

If you don't exercise much, don't have a healthy diet, smoke alot, and consumed alcohol regularly, is fat/obese....

You should start to worry

How diabetes is gotten? Usually 3 reasons.

1. Hereditary. Too bad, just take care.

2. Dietary abuse damaging one's own body.

3. Lack of exercise rusting one's own body.

It's amazing that people pay to go to gyms and slimming centres while taking lift or escalator even for just 2 or 3 storeys. There's a free exercise machine out there. It's called the staircase.

It's amazing that people risk their lives dashing across roads. There's another free exercise machine out their. It's called the bridge.

It's amazing that people spend loads of money on feasts. Then spend loads of money on health remedies. It's akin to buying poison to eat in order to buy antidote to eat.

What people should keep in mind is that Type II diabetes is reversible.

The problem is that it is more profitable for the big Pharma companies to come out with solutions to deal with the symptoms & not the cure.

So all those medications people are taking are not designed to cure diabetes:rolleyes:
