Second Transport Minister Lim Hwee Hua said that by doing so, commuters might find they have benefited.

This was her advice to residents at a dialogue in Bukit Gombak on Sunday.

Residents came to the dialogue prepared with questions ranging from the new casinos and the recent floods, to the new fare system.

The new system kicked in on July 3.

One resident said: "They felt that they are paying a higher fare after the new fare restructure."

Under the new system, about two-thirds of commuters will pay less.

Those who make single or short trips may lose out.

The new calculation method removes the "transfer penalty", which is the amount commuters pay each time they make transfers during a single journey. The authorities have said the aim is to provide for a fairer way of calculating fares.

Mrs Lim, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Finance Minister, said: "We hope that if they review it, say a weekly travel pattern - instead of looking at it on a per-trip basis, look at it as a weekly travel pattern, and sometimes also in terms of what is to come later on, more choices - in due course, I am sure they will benefit as well.

"We do not want people to be constrained by the fact that they have to mix transfers and therefore they take the longer route just to save on fares."

Mrs Lim said that over time, as more transport links are added, the new fare system will allow "maximum choice and flexibility".

She also noted that when comparing fares between the new and old system, commuters should remember that the public transport operators had given out temporary rebates amounting of 3 per cent of fares last year, in light of the recession. These expired on July 3, when the new system kicked in.

She added that fares did not go up as much this year after the Public Transport Council's fare review, as it had implemented the full 2.5 per cent reduction allowed by the fare formula.

Another transport issue brought up during the dialogue was overcrowding in the trains during peak hours.

One resident said: "The MRT train plying along Bukit Gombak station is extremely crowded during peak hours. I have to wait for the third train, and when I managed to squeeze into the train, my nose is near the sliding glass."

Mrs Lim replied that about 1,300 train trips have been added since 2008.

There are plans to add more services and cut waiting time.

Mrs Lim said: "I would like to assure you that we are trying to approach the issue on many fronts and adding on a lot more capacity as well."

Mrs Lim also toured the estate and gave out food packs to low-income families. -

this is a new form of creativity in increasing public transport by not directly telling u the "increase". instead they tell u the reversed that u "actually save in the long term".

the increase now is more than 10%.

this format is rather similar to its predecessor in increase in gst. and the preaching relayed was:

INCREASE IN GST IS TO HELP THE POOR & NEEDIES.

in singapore, we do not really need concerned minitoots. we only need people born with the gift of gab to smoke the nation when they bleed us dry.

Anything that is disadvantage to MIWs, they will not say, e.g. 40% increases, but "adjustment", "fairness", "flexibility" and "transparency".

Thanks to LKY and his gang and 66.6%

Lets be fair about bus fares, with the increase it still remains 'Affordable'; comparing with neighbouring 3rd countries, theirs are 'Cheap cheap cheap'.

Which equation says that by paying more one is in fact benefiting, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua must be thinking most Leeaporeans are all born this morning, like me.
