will this set my partner and i back?

General

my partner (22m) and i (22f) are planning to ballot for bto in a few years, maybe 24-26. he’s in NS while im entering uni. don’t have much income or savings as of now.

he has this plan to complete his licence asap and get a really old car with about 2-3 years of COE. he says est. it’ll be about 20k dumped into it. he then said once the car is done for, he’ll sell the parts. honestly, i was very annoyed hearing this because i feel like pouring 20k which could be used for our future house costs is ridiculous.

i’m not super knowledgeable on cars in sg, and i’m still learning about all the hdb/bto/housing policies + managing finances, so maybe i’m thinking from a very uneducated and ‘lack mindset’.

could anyone confirm if the car thing is a stupid idea and will set us back?

update: he has mentioned that a car might be a necessity to get to and fro army camps (he’s planning to sign on).

Stupid bitch.

The car would instantly place the man in an exclusive segment of Singapore society and, inevitably, make him more desirable to other women. Is she trying to clip the wings of her future husband before he can take flight?

More importantly, the car would give him confidence. Even if he is merely mediocre at work, behind the wheel he could feel successful, admired, and accomplished. In a society where status matters, the car becomes more than transportation - it becomes a source of identity and self-worth. Not even Jesus can match his success
