Buying a private home in S'pore is more than just for prestige. I wanted a more spacious and comfortable private condo in a safer neighbourhood for my family. It is also an investment on a freehold home, and not 99-year-lease. My wife and I managed to upgrade out of our HDB by our early 30s. It is far more difficult for young PMET couples to do so nowadays.

Because of the kind of people the PAP regime is bringing in, and the way newer BTO flats are being constructed, sometimes it might be more prudent to buy a private home, if you can afford it. For personal protection.

The private property is legally in the name of my mum, but I paid for it. And I am named as the sole beneficiary under her will. The will is kept by me. So it's as good as mine. After she's gone, I'll probably sell it off when the price is right.
