India’s prime minister has appealed to the public to work from home amid a surge in energy prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking in the southern city of Hyderabad, Narendra Modi compared the “duty” of citizens to help the nation to that of soldiers in a war.
Every “patriotic” member of society should avoid buying gold and other foreign goods to conserve foreign exchange, he said.

Farmers should halve the amount of fertiliser they use, while commuters should take public transport, pool cars or switch to electric vehicles.
The appeal marked the most drastic intervention by India’s long-standing leader since the US launched its war on Iran on Feb 28.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, New Delhi ordered one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. But only about one-fifth of the working population is office-based, making the restrictions nearly impossible to enforce.
“Whenever the country has gone through war or any other major crisis,” Mr Modi said, “every citizen has fulfilled their responsibility.
