A man was caught on surveillance camera waltzing into a dessert shop in Jewel Changi Airport after hours, picking up a tip jar off the counter and walking off as if nothing happened in the wee hours of Nov. 30.
Casual
In a video of the incident which circulated online, a man, carrying a backpack, could be seen approaching a queue pole placed at the entrance of a shop.
Commenters on the Sgfollowsall Instagram
page identified the shop as Chow Zan Dessert at Jewel Chang Airport.
The timestamp on the surveillance footage indicated that it was 11:55pm on Nov. 30 at the time.
The man shifted the queue pole aside and walked up to the counter before peering into a tip jar.
He momentarily glanced outside the shop before lifting the jar up and walking away.
The entire episode lasted a mere 17 seconds.
The man did not replace the queue pole.
Staff sense desperation
Chow Zan Dessert shared about the theft on
Instagram on Dec. 3, quipping that the man could have at least left behind the tip jar.
Speaking with
Mothership, a Chow Zan Dessert staff shared that they were stunned when they learned what happened.
They commented that the man was so bold as to commit the theft without wearing a mask to hide his identity.
"Obviously, there is CCTV everywhere," the staff said.
"He must be very desperate. He must be aware that there is a tip box there. Sad to see that people are willing to take these kinds of risk(s) to commit this kind of crime," the staff continued.
They were not sure how much was in the jar, but estimated that the amount was less than S$100.
The jar has been replaced, but the staff said that, in future, they will keep their tip jars securely after hours.
Responding to queries from
Mothership, a Singapore Police Force spokesperson confirmed that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing.
