MetMalaysia: Tropical storm Senyar may dump 300mm of rain​

PETALING JAYA: Tropical storm Senyar is expected to bring continuous rain over the next two days as well as wind gusts of up to 50kph.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the storm is expected to bring around 300mm of rain when it reaches Peninsular Malaysia.

He added that rainfall over the past two days had reached 120mm to 150mm overnight in parts of the Klang Valley and along the west coast, triggering flash floods and landslides in low-lying areas.

"The wet condition is expected from today until Saturday, with rainfall estimates being at least 200–300mm over the next 24 hours until Saturday.

"This, as the storm's circulation is feeding moisture from the sea into thick rain bands that continue to sweep across western and central regions, raising the risk of flash floods, reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions," he said at an emergency press conference at the MetMalaysia headquarters here.

Hisham said that Aceh in Indonesia had recently recorded more than 600mm of rain within 36 hours, when the storm was at peak intensity.

Earlier, it was reported that Senyar is moving towards the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and is currently located 102km southwest of Lumut, Perak.

The weather system is currently at 3.6 degrees north, 99.9 degrees east off northern Sumatra and is tracking east-southeast into the Strait of Malacca at a speed of about 24kph.

Yesterday, Hisham told the New Straits Times that Senyar was the first weather system to reach such high intensity in the Strait of Malacca.
