Knee Arthritis: is there an alternative cure besides surgery?

There has been noticeable improvement after 12 months of working with a physiotherapist and trainer. However, there is still around 10 - 15% of pain when walking down the stairs, after sitting down for too long or walking too far. Vacations overseas have not been comfortable with all that walking and freezing temperatures.

Fundamentally, physio works for muscles. It is also good for rehab after operations or injuries. For example, your doctor might send you to physio to rebuild your leg/thigh muscles after you stopped walking for a few days after an operation, not because physio is good for bones. Rightfully physio don't solve bone-related issues.

The same may be said of medical treatments like PRP and hydrocortisone injections which vary in effectiveness between patients owing to the underlying cause of pain, the preparation method and patient. Cortisone is better for acute inflammation, but not help if the pain is due to structural damage. PRP's effectiveness depends on the concentration of platelets and white blood cells in the injection, and may not work if a patient is taking blood thinners.
 
Glucosamine does not solve arthritis. Supplements and TCMs in orthopedics are like scams. Be mindful that TCM does not solve bone and joint issues, they just anyhow guess, or even inflict more pain to distract your body.

Knee Replacement surgery is the only solution. However, this is a scary operation.

In my biased opinion, there is no good orthopedic in private sector because they don't upgrade their skills for years. I can name a few many "reputable" orthopedics in private sector who screwed up badly and patients had to go back to govt hospital to seek help. I can write another page about their dirty deeds.

You will rely on injections when your knee starts to give u problem and you must reduce your running or climbing stairs. Slow walk is fine. Be mindful that humans are more like monkeys than leopards, so you don't really see monkeys running long distances.

Knee Replacement surgeries have advanced in the past decade, and significantly reduced recovery time. You could get off your bed within 24-48 hours and walk happily within a month if you have a good doctor. In government hospitals, the young doctors are very good because they have been trained to operate robotics which provide more precision and shorten operation time (which translates to a shorter recovery). The senior doctors are like skilled craftmen because Knee Replacement surgeries pretty much rely on "worksmanship". The best senior doctors in government hospitals are so good that they end up clearly shit for the private hospital doctors eg handle re-operations, infections, or re-replacement 5-10 years later.

If you don't replace your worn knees, you will eventually injure or spoil your hips and spine, especially if you are female. Less doctors will do for you when you are 85 when you are in severe pain and spine destroyed. By then, painkillers will not help. You cannot even move or sit upright. However, if you operate early and continue to run and climb stairs, you probably need another (re-do) before you die. Therefore, many people drag their feet.
All commercial treatments are scam regardless TCM or western medical system.

All were for profits, not cure.

My physiotherapy sessions have certainly helped relieve most of the initial pain.
 
Arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness in our knees. I have been coping with chronic pain in one knee for the past 3 years. I tried hydrocortisone and platelet rich plasma injections as well as massages, exercises and taking joint supplements and oral pain medication. Apart from a total knee replacement, has anyone found an effective long term cure or relief? I have seen significant improvement after 12 months of physiotherapy. However, there is still around 10 - 15% of pain when walking down the stairs, after sitting down for too long or walking too far. Perhaps the physio has only delayed the inevitable TKR.


Your cartilage has dried up and the bones are rubbing which causes the pain.

Don't waste your money on glucosamine, collagen, injections and therapy.

The only way to solve your problem is to go for knee replacements.

I have both my knee caps replaced by Dr Brian Lee, a senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth.

My condition has been diagnosed as osteoarthritis which is common in older adults. Both orthopaedic surgeons I consulted at Mount Elizabeth and NUH said that the cartilage that cushions my left knee joint has worn down over time. I used to play football on weekends, jog and workout at the gym 5 days a week. I probably overdid the active part in a bid to stay healthy.

Eat less is not enough. You must be without food for at least 48 hours. Your insulin level will drop, and your body will switch from digesting food to healing the body.
