A few years ago, my child told me that his junior in Sec 1 ended his life; he couldn't get over his PSLE grades.

Today, i read about another case, a P6 student who committed suicide at home.

In many countries, they ceased elementary/primary school exams, including South Korea.

Yet, in Singapore, our new PSLE grading system added more stress to the students. During my times, we could use a stronger subject to offset a weaker subject to pull up the average T-score. Now, our new PSLE scoring system punishes student exponentially for subjects that they are weak at.

RIP to the child, hope you are in a better place now.

My mantra is to work hard but never listen to pap and never vote for pap

I always tell the same to my children

I'm not a parent.
If I'm a parent, I will focus to lookout my child personality and skills, instead on academic.
I will not give my child any tuition (even if they are free) whether they are poor or average or strong academically.
I strongly believes that the time spent in school is enough. If my child is willing to learn, in school is enough.
I will then monitor his academic, together with his personality and skills and guide him to pursue the correct path.

To me having tuition is a very very silly thing to do. You give money to conmen part tart ji, you are also giving unnecessary stress to your child. Outside of school, I rather my child to focus on other talent eg sports, arts, etc.
Cb in school already so many hours still not enough KNN

I agree with you, but it's precisely because you are not a parent you can speak without pressure from competition.

站著說話不腰疼。

Each time when I gave feedback to my tam jiak ter nao ex colleague about what I think, they will also give something like this kind of leesponse, and said you are not a parent, so you will not understand.
Not being a parent doesn't mean that the person can speak with no pressure and anyhow giving them feedbacks.
And the thing is I do understand their situations.

Basically all these arises from being kiasu.
I'm merely speaking from a non kiasu person point of view.
Even if I'm a parent, I will not be pressured by my child academic performance, even if other children are doing better than them de lor.

Did your colleagues agree with you?

If they do not agree with you, it doesn't mean what you say is untrue. If I agree with you, it doesn't mean what they say is untrue.

You are not the only person I know who made such a statement. There is nothing wrong with the statement, and we speak with ease because we don't have to react to any pressure.

If I say even if I were a parent I wouldn't send my children for tuition, we must remember it's preceded with a big IF.

It's the same as saying what you want to do in your next life.

What you say I agree, but I'm just pointing out the big IF may change the result. For a start, it will not be my decision alone because the children have a mother. And I'm not going to pretend that the CB I oar every night will not impact my decision.

Of course he didn't agree since he said I'm not a parent and will not understand his situation.

And after that I thought it was better for me to zip or else I might have to tell him you tam jiak ter nao and kiasu.

Eg he even needed to get bank loan to let the child go for pte uni oversea euro trip. The trip wasn't cheap at all, it cost around 6k for the air tix and lodging, and some activities.
I asked him, is that a optional item or mandatory. He said optional. So I told him can grad is good enough, what for get into debt for extra curricular activities. And the trip had a costly skydiving activity. I asked him, for fuck man. He said to build up confidence.
So I just zipped lor.

Then his premise is different from mine, since I agree with you.

He is unable to distinguish the moral rightness of your statement from the will to apply that moral rightness. And because he lacks the will to apply what is morally right and succumbs to peer pressure, he tries to undermine your right to make a moral statement by saying that you are not a parent.

Being a parent or not will NOT alter any bit the moral rightness of a statement. If the statement is morally correct, it does NOT matter if you are bachelor or a parent, a virgin or a slut, the statement will remain correct.

He would be honest if he had instead said "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."

@Boonsiong KYM ?:confused:

I see it as a self justification lor.
And the uni very smart also.
Knowing such kiasu parents are everywhere, they even made a seamless bank loan thru the uni admin and able to pay with instalment.

It's to add some semblance of a foreign university education. After all, you can't tell people you graduated from Cambridge if you have never even touched the foreign soil in Cambridge campus.
