Funny you mentioned NS. in Taiwan, despite the threat of China invasion, NS was only recently extended to one year. Previously it was only a few months.

Malaysians need to questions their Sultan's statement, arguing that the term important partner is not supported by data. Last year's bilateral trade between Russia and Malaysia was only $2.5 billion i.e. a tiny 0.4% of Malaysia's total global trade. This figure is insignificant and would need to increase dramatically to be considered important.

Is Russia a trusted partner? Remember when PM Anwar Ibrahim had to accept denials from the Putin regarding the shooting down of MH17 in 2014, even as a UN report confirmed that Russian-backed separatists were responsible. The Sultan's visit to Russia is an act that boosts the image of Putin in return for minimal economic gain. Malaysians must be frustrated and in disbelief at their king's rhetoric vs the reality of the situation.
