Late 30s and Still Rejected: The Harsh Reality of Upskilling in Singapore

Be a Prompt Engineer ...

A prompt engineer is an expert in crafting instructions (prompts) for generative AI models to produce desired outputs. They use natural language to guide AI, particularly large language models, towards generating specific results, like text, images, or code. Essentially, they are the ones who tell AI what to do and how to do it effectively.

Here's a more detailed look:
  • What they do:
Prompt engineers design and optimize prompts to guide AI models in generating specific outputs. This involves carefully crafting the input text to ensure the AI understands the task and produces relevant, high-quality results.

  • How they do it:
They use a combination of creativity, knowledge of AI models, and experimentation to develop effective prompts. This may involve providing context, instructions, examples, and even assigning roles to the AI to help it understand the desired output.

    • Why it's important:
Prompt engineering is crucial for harnessing the full potential of generative AI. Well-designed prompts can significantly improve the accuracy, relevance, and quality of the AI's output.
    • Examples:
Prompt engineers might craft prompts for tasks like generating creative content, summarizing data, translating languages, or even debugging code. They might also use prompts to refine images or videos generated by AI models.
    • Emerging field:
Prompt engineering is a relatively new field, but it's gaining increasing importance as generative AI becomes more powerful and widely used.

sorry ... no fellow sinkies will bother to sympathise or worry the same happening to themselves or their families .... they will continue to embrace the FTs and prolong the rule of the leaders in the erection .... RIP :whistling:
Sinkie bosses are known to hire all foreigners to stroke their ego and dumbly sabotage own Sinkies. It’s only Sinkies who bust out killing Sinkies

The truth is, upskilling in your late 30s or beyond isn’t the magic solution it’s made out to be, especially if you are a local. I’ve realized that age really does matter in the job market for Singaporeans, no matter what people say. Employers talk about valuing experience and lifelong learning, but when it comes down to the crunch, they still prefer someone younger, someone who fits neatly into their expectations.
The truth does hurt. SkillsFuture prepares most of us older workers for a life of underemployment or continued unemployment.

I’m writing this because I need to be honest about something that’s been weighing on me for a while.

A few years ago, I bought into the dream that upskilling would change my life. I signed up for project management modules, took data analytics courses, as well as spent countless evenings and weekends learning new things. I genuinely believed that if I worked hard enough, if I kept improving myself, I’d eventually land a better job or maybe even embark on a new career.

But now, after sending out hundreds of job applications — each one painstakingly customized, every cover letter rewritten for the role — I’m still stuck. Most of the time, I don’t even receive a reply. When I do, it’s another polite rejection. It’s hard not to take it personally after putting in so much effort.

It’s both upskilling and employment contacts and network that matters. Which sector do you used to work in? One of my classmates told us he lost his job in 2002 when he was 30 and it took him nearly 9 months find a new suitable job. He is currently doing very well

Its better to be down when u are younger so when you grow older, you will look back that the tough times are over. All the best

There is a growing concern among local job seekers that some foreign HR managers, particularly those from the same nationality, may have a preference for hiring individuals from their own country, leading to perceptions of ethnic favoritism or clique hiring practices.
It’s not uncommon to see in some factories near Woodlands checkpoint all full of JHK and their HR managers are JHKs, followed by some Tech companies full of CECA and their HRs as well. Get used to it.

Ever worked and reported to a CECA boss and over 30 CECA colleagues in a department who need me and 5 more Sinkies for the foreign quota, Sinkie HR was useless when 1 Sinkie left, the Sinkie HR had a long 2 hour exit interview but is just for show cos she allowed new replacement with CECA. Got used to it.

Seriously,U need a new govt to prioritize jobs for Singaporeans in Singapore.
To have a new government is remotely possible!
You need to obtain a diploma in Uptron University in India or convince the present government to abolish the CECA agreement, it would definitely help to land you and other locals a lucrative pay job.

It is far easier to bounce back after getting retrenched at a younger age. Most of those PMEs who are laid off after 45 would have fallen over the cliff, and have to resort to gig or commission work; they are looking at another 20 years or more of "eating what they kill".

It depends on the person. Then the question is why do employers prefer younger workers? I do know of people who are dutifully employed over 65 years old. It’s managing both expectations and experiences at the same time

Do you all know that most CECAs don’t even want to work in Singapore these days? They all flock to the Middle East and Dubai where gd pay nearer to India attracts them.

India IIT graduates won’t even want to work in Singapore because they get roped easily to work in US directly and enjoy a gd lifestyle without the sweltering heat and people talking about CECA sentiments in Singapore
