Food Outlets Past And Present

I think I have a vague memory of this burger stall...that was before Mr.Kwang started his Mac Donald's outlet at Liat Tower, where Burger King is now.. ( is it still there?)...

used to buy myself a MacShake, Apple Pie, Fries...and oggle at the girls walking by....along Orchard Rd , that is..

and whatever happened to all the Centre Point McDonald's kids?...all grown up adults today? I believe..and having chindren of their own...:D

Juz for the record bro! It's Robert Kwan not Kwang. The earliest joint is also not the one at Jackie's Bowl but the now defunct A & W at Dunearn Road. Memories are made of this! Old Josephians & Rafflesians will also remember Waterloo St sarabat stalls.:)

Don't forget that there were plenty of other schools in that little corner of Spore: Catholic high, CHIJ, ACS,.... I'm sure many have eaten at the Waterloo sarabat stalls. :)

And opp was the Alhambra cinema!

Further down at Miiddle rd, there were the steamboat stalls. Dishes and sticks of raw meat, fish, cuttlefish, etc placed before you and you dipped them into the boiling pot to cook..

Only remember going there once to see a movie about a blind kunfu fighter :)

I remember the satay & soto because it was my favourite. Now I regret not having tried the other things ... because they are all gone :(

huh.. at Tai Seng was Bright Cinema (光明) right ? 50cents movie, haha...

Could be wrong on the details as to the name but I'm certain there was a camera store there on that corner. Wanted to ask the people at Peninsula if it was Ruby, but never got around to doing it.

I remember going to Peninsula when it first opened & the the CarPark(food court) at Orchard Rd predates Peninsula. I went to school at ACS (Canning Rise) & still remember that there used to be old shops where the current Peninsula stands .

Hock Lam Street( where the Current Funan Mall stands) had great food like wanton mee, spare parts soup. Some of the hawkers moved to the Hill St food court next to the fire station which has been demolished

Used to eat at Koek Rd on Sundays, next to the wet market. Only had my favourite wanton mee & chinese style satay. The pau store was an uncle's favourite :)

Will never forgive the PAP for destroying many of my favourite makan places :(

For the sake of progress, everything was uprooted...I still recall the layout of Cold Storage Orchard, Fiztpatrick's Supermarket, CK Tang...and Orchard Rd from the days it was old with the cinema , shaw house to when it was all gone....

Those will recall MAGNOLIA SNACK BAR at Capitol...ate there the last day it closed...

Polar Cafe at Hight Street, next to Ensign Book Store, and the other corner was talk of the town....the lovely curry puffs, Chef's Sandwiches, down with a glass of Del Monte Tomato juice...or the triangular Magnolia Fresh Milk....

Turtle soup, would be Bugis Street, mouth watering...together with the Chicken Rice , Wanton Mee.....

Hock Lam Street...the lime juice drink....until they moved to Hill Street Hawker Centre...where are they now?

Remember the cinema "Alambola" (in Cantonese it was "Man Mo Law")...spells stupid but it sounds like that...along Beach Road in the early 60s.

I always remember, mom and dad took me to watch the 9:30pm show and then at 11:30 pm we went to the satay stall a few streets next to it. I was then less than 10 years old.

Oh what a wounderful time.

Two years back when I visited Singapore with my 12 year old son, who was born in Canada, I can't even find the location.

It is just memory now. When I struggle to think deeper, it is like a time machine when I can even feel holding on to my mother's hand while waiting for taxi after the mid-night supper on a Saturday night. How I wish I can haold her hands again...she deceased in 1993, just after I emigrated to Canada.

I remember at that time the Singaporeans have guts to protest against the British and gangsters roam the streets but then they are true-blue Singaporeans and not imported gangsters.

Is there a time machine or twilight zone where we can go back to the past just for 5 mintues!
