S'pore fail to make Asian Cup Finals

SINGAPORE'S bid to reach the Finals of the Asian Cup for the first time on merit failed at the last hurdle yesterday, when they lost 1-2 to Jordan in Amman.
The result, coupled with Iran's 1-0 win over Thailand, meant that the Lions finished at the bottom of Group E and would not qualify for the Finals.
Iran and Jordan, the top two teams, will head to Qatar for the 16-team Finals next year.
The last time Singapore featured at the continent's elite tournament was in 1984 as hosts.
'We are disappointed and sorry that we are not able to secure a place in the Asian Cup Finals for our fans and Singapore,' said the Football Association of Singapore's general secretary Winston Lee.
'It is painful and obviously not easy to swallow this defeat. We will now have to pick ourselves up, come back stronger and do better for our fans the next time.'
Facing freezing conditions in front of a hostile 27,000-strong home crowd at the King Abdullah International Stadium, Singapore fell behind to an early goal from Odai Al-Saify.
Noh Alam Shah hit back for the visitors from the restart, but Basher Bani Yaseen's 60th minute winner for Jordan meant heartbreak for the Lions.

It was a disappointing end because with Thailand's loss last night.... All Singapore had to do was win... This is very disappointing but if you read the straits times, you will get a different picture. It's sheer stupidity and lack of understanding of the game. GCT said France imported a team from Africa to win the World Cup for them. Sheer idiot, didn't even bother to find out. African countries have never won the World Cup nor even progressed beyond Q-finals. If want to buy, try shopping in Brazil or Argentina better. Anyway FIFA disallow international buyover for World Cup games. Have to come young with clean slate (never played at full international level before). It's apparent that the ministers didn't know that and didn't bother to find out at that time.

France was already pedigree footballing nation with an European crown to boot and several close fights for the World Cup. Indeed, France invented the World Cup (England invented the game but France invented the cup). These north African players chose to go to France to further their chances at career and glory. Most of north Africa were French colonies with colonial ties (just like Indians and Pakistanis would find it easier to migrate to Britain). Singapore wants to buy that? Invade some countries, colonise them for a hundred years, then see how.

Now let me expose your naivety in World Soccer. The Asian Cup has nothing to do with World Cup in the first place. Qualifying for the Asian Cup is not a pre-requisite for playing in the World Cup. Look no further than England. Did they qualify for European Championship ? Now they're tournament favourites in South Africa.

Winning the regional competition means nothing. Look at Egypt ? African Cup Champion but couldn't even qualify for the World Cup.

Our players are big match type of players. How do you expect our players to motivate themselves when playing against minnows like Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq ? Wait till you see them play against top teams in Europe, you will see the Barcelona of Asia Soccer !

Drogba = World class. Agu = Kampong class. if Agu is great, he wouldve been talent spotted & snapped by feeder clubs for him to catapult to the international arena. Word has it, he took a Spore passport & his form spiral downwards from there.
