Let me tell you of an interesting story about the ugliness of elitism in SPH or Mediacorp. There was this top SIM mass comm grad guy who used to hang around a pub thats filled with reporters and senior broadcasters for almost a year because his then gf worked there as an exec.
Coming from a poor family background, he felt awkward having to mingle with the "who's who" of that so called old school reporters fraternity. During that time that guy had trouble looking for a job because he was fresh out of SIM. He never thought of asking a favor because he always felt that looking for a job was a personal matter and that if people wanted to help they would have offered. As time passed, he saw the characters of most of these peeps, who are nothing more than back slappers, arrogant and mostly fakes.
Throughout the conversations and pool playing moments he constantly have to endure their boasting about their jobs and their rich and eventful lives. The rest just keep their distance once they found out about his background.
The great experience made him realised that he took the wrong degree course even though he excelled in school - as in a strange but ironic way he mingled with the peeps first-hand that prevented him from entering the industry!
But alas, he moved on and realised that the path to success for poor fuckers has always been laden with more obstacles than the upper classes. He is proud now that he has carved his own skill set and has met a much better girl too.
To end, the protagonist (the only bombastic word used here
) is fearful for the nation if such is the peeps that run the media, retrospectively speaking.
