I don't think he hit the brakes. What probably happened is the front left wheel that took the brunt of the impact locked up because the whole brake assembly was badly damaged or it could have ended up caught in the buckled wheel arch.

The car definitely has ABS so it would not be possible to lock any of the wheels via the brake pedal. The single skid mark shows that only one wheel locked up.

It's a pretty hard impact and if it wasn't the brakes it could well have been the wheel arch. Remember we're talking about the crumple zone where cars are designed to cave in in order to protect the passenger cabin from high G forces.

Nope. I think he brake because the driver so drunk or high on drugs, after he hit the car, he decided to stop there and then.
