Only watch TV drama and movies but dont know exactly what happened inside the Courthouse.
Lets say, hypothetically, you are to be a Witness.
And you are the only Witness.
So, you testify that your friend was in your house whole night surfing SBF.
(tsk tsk - Lying to help your friend).
Thus your friend is acquitted.

In the Court of Law,
Will you be asked to place your hand on the bible to take the Oath.?
Swearing to tell the truth, and nothing but the whole truth.

But, you lied to save your best friend.
What will happen for lying under Oath?

Yet to come across a criminal case whereby an accused was acquitted solely because of a witness’ testimony that the former was in the house or elsewhere with the witness.

If found lying in court, will be charged. Likely a jail term.

Police witnesses are quite competent lying in court when lawyer for the accused person alleged his client was abused and/or assaulted.

I try not to lie at all. I'd rather not have a relationship with a person than to have to lie to maintain a relationship. Takes up what little mental capacity I have and makes my life miserable. The truth sets you free.

Also, if the alibi was given when first interviewed, more credibility given compared to a belatedly manufactured one.

If alibi was used, investigators need to prove or disprove it. IO then makes recommendation to proceed with charge or to take no further action, with DPP’s concurrence.

In order to proceed with charge, Prosecution must feel confident of proving its case beyond reasonable doubt.

No statue of limitations for criminal cases in S’pore. Applies only to civil cases. Can be tried again on such cases.

I think the criminal procedure code covers this. Not sure what section though.
