This is very new to me.
Only watch TV drama and movies but dont know exactly what happened inside the Courthouse.
Lets say, hypothetically, you are to be a Witness.
And you are the only Witness.
So, you testify that your friend was in your house whole night surfing SBF.
(tsk tsk - Lying to help your friend).
Thus your friend is acquitted.

In the Court of Law,
Will you be asked to place your hand on the bible to take the Oath.?
Swearing to tell the truth, and nothing but the whole truth.

But, you lied to save your best friend.
What will happen for lying under Oath?

Ya, for me , nothing, Life goes on.

What are you Guys opinion on this issue.?

depends on your faith...u r liable to face divine judgement and legal judgement. If you are religious, u will be afraid of divine judgement

Depends on whether they catch you. If caught, the crime you will be committing is called perjury. Lying under oath. :

Punishment for false evidence
193. Whoever intentionally gives false evidence in any stage of a judicial proceeding, or fabricates false evidence for the purpose of being used in any stage of a judicial proceeding, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years, and shall also be liable to fine; and whoever intentionally gives or fabricates false evidence in any other case, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
Explanation 1.—A trial before a court martial is a judicial proceeding.
Explanation 2.—An investigation directed by law preliminary to a proceeding before a court of justice, is a stage of a judicial proceeding, though that investigation may not take place before a court of justice.
Illustration
A, in an inquiry before a Magistrate for the purpose of ascertaining whether Z ought to be committed for trial, makes on oath a statement which he knows to be false. As this inquiry is a stage of a judicial proceeding, A has given false evidence.
Explanation 3.—An investigation directed by a court of justice according to law, and conducted under the authority of a court of justice, is a stage of a judicial proceeding, though that investigation may not take place before a court of justice.

A, in an inquiry before an officer deputed by a court of justice to ascertain on the spot the boundaries of land, makes on oath a statement which he knows to be false. As this inquiry is a stage of a judicial proceeding, A has given false evidence.

What you choose to do depends on your own values and morals. Everyone is going to be different.

Agreed.
But there are millions out there during their wedding.
Swearing under Oath to love her blah blah blah
Till death do us part.

But how many are really obeying the Oath they had taken?

Old fart once said our pledge is just an aspiration, so I assume an oath is just as valid as a fart.

YES, Agreed.
But lets say, hypothetically, your friend's case is foolproof.
Meaning no other Witness, No CCTVs, Totally No evidence.

Or, to put bluntly,
You are willing to take the Risk as your friend had helped you before.
Hence, you owed him ONE.!!
And, your loyalty to your friend is there.

Agreed,
Already, in life, we had committed so many sins.
So, whats another Lie to add to our sinful statistics.
No difference in going to Hell, If there is really a Hell.

Just like this movie I had watched.
Forgot the title.
The prisoner is already serving Life sentence.
Then, he commit another crime inside the jail.
The judge sentenced him to an additional 2 years.
What did he do?
He Fucked the Judge - "Great, I am already serving Life, What is another 2years"?
Catch the drift?

some life sentences can be commuted after 20yrs. if he gets a 2nd sentence of two yrs, he may get another jail term after his life sentence has been commuted. Dont use movies to justify your real life behaviour

that's very difficult for me to answer with the info given. I got a seriously long answer which I am going to try and cut down since you're interested in an external opinion.

I subscribe to personal ethics. Not legal or religious code which dictates punishment in 1 form or another. I must be happy and satisfied with myself for having done the deed.

So in this case, it really boils down to respect. Respect for the law and respect for the defendant. If the law is seriously screwed up and the defendant was morally correct, I will probably lie my ass off. If the law is decent and honourable and the defendant is some scumbag, I will not save him, even if he is my friend. Frankly, I don't see myself having this problem because if he was a scumbag, I will do my best never to owe a scumbag anything.

So real world example, let's say if the guy in the process of saving someone's life threw medical equipment around while doing so because in a rush and was caught before he can clean up is being sent to jail for 5 years for littering. I probably will lie. If on the other hand, he's caught for raping young girls and asks you to cover him, he can go hang.

@nightsafari

Great answer.
Will take into consideration.
hope it helps. If you wish can pm me circumstances and make the case as anonymous as possible. I can't really give my definite answer unless presented with all the facts, but you are more than welcome to ask me hypothetical questions about the ethics framework I subscribe to.
