SINGAPORE - Popular Los Angeles egg sandwich brand Eggslut is set to debut in Singapore early next year (2021).

In a press release sent exclusively to The Straits Times, South Korea-based global food company SPC Group announced that it "holds the exclusive license" to operate Eggslut in Singapore. The outlet's location is yet to be confirmed.

The egg sandwich specialist is best known for its signature "Slut" dish of coddled egg on potato puree served with sliced baguette; and The Fairfax burger, which includes scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, spicy sriracha mayonnaise and a brioche bun.

The name refers to a chef who adds an egg to everything to make it better. The late chef Anthony Bourdain was reportedly the first to use it on his travel and food show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations in a 2009 episode.

The SPC Group is behind bakery chain Paris Baguette as well as New York burger chain Shake Shack's debut in Singapore last year (2019) at Jewel Changi Airport. Shake Shack's second outlet in Neil Road launched in February, and its third outlet at Liat Towers in Orchard Road is slated to open early next month (August).

The group's spokesman says: "The synergy between these two names (Shake Shack and Eggslut) strengthens our position for accessible, high-quality dining concepts as we grow our presence in Singapore and Southeast Asia."

Eggslut - co-founded in 2011 by Filipino-American chef Alvin Cailan and his cousin Jeff Vales - started as a food truck in LA. Its flagship location launched in 2013 at LA's Grand Central Market.

The brand is now in 10 locations in the United States, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

The trend of Instagram-worthy sandwiches is not new to Singapore. Existing brands include Korean-inspired Egg Stop at Paya Lebar Square, Jurong Point and CityLink Mall; as well as South Korean toast chain Isaac Toast at Plaza Singapura and Waterway Point.

Although the food and beverage scene has seen several closures in the past few months, Eggslut adds to the overseas brands continuing to open here.

New York's Luke's Lobster opens next month (August), while Danish pastry shop Leckerbaer opens on July 23 at Isetan Scotts in Shaw House. The brands are brought in by lifestyle company Caerus Holding, best known for the debut of New York's famous cake boutique, Lady M, here in 2013.
