Hi All, It’s my first time posting and I really need advice on the following. Shall not go too deep into my personal details but would really love to hear from all of you, personal experiences, your thoughts or based on your knowledge on this topic.

I was convicted for a drug related offence a couple of years back. Prior to my conviction and jail term, I was working for a local SME for 3 years and was doing well :( It was a wrong mistake I made in my life.

I was wondering how if it’s true that the society can be unforgiving to ex-convicts. There might a majority who actually went back on their old ways, but how about the minority who have supportive families and really want to change for the better? Any advice on this? And does anyone know of companies who are actually open to hiring ex convicts? I know how people require actions to prove that we’ve changed, but who would give us a chance to prove our actions?

I’m not sure if my sentence can be rendered spent, but this is my goal after 5 years, to appeal for my record to be spent with credible backings.

hopefully I won’t recieve any nasty remarks. thanks y’all (:

If you were good in your job your boss would want you back.
I’m sure previously SCORE did job placement for you before

Have a friend who was jailed two years for rioting in which a person was killed. Anyway, long story short... focus your effort in job-finding in the private sector. According to him, GLCs and govt positions even if they hire you, will be paid pittance and not commensurate with your experience and qualifications. This is according to him lah, he works for a logistics company for more than a decade already since he came out and he always declared he was jailed before. Now happily married with three kids, all ok, but he regretted his actions that caused a death though, this is something that will stick with him rest of his life.

Try looking for job in cannabis industry. You will have to move abroad of course. Cannabis (recreational) is legal in Canada and Uruguary.

For medical cannabis I think Thailand and south Korea is legal in asia.

Would Canada let him in with a drug conviction?

According to an HR director of my former company, companies usually deem ex convicted recreational drug users as lower risk hires compared to other crimes like embezzlement, rape, assault etc.

Try to look fresh and healthy during interviews too.

All the best!

I have no idea. But I am sure there are people with drug convictions who get into Canada. How they do it, I have no idea and me a doctor would be the last person to ask.

LOL!

Before my release, There were not enough jobs and mostly were production and cleaning jobs. Office jobs were scarce during that period.

youre right, I’m working with my old boss now and am doing well, my only fear is that I did not declare it to him. So I’m living in fear and guilt single day. I know I should and know the consequences. But thts something tht I’m thinking thru now.

Thanks for the encouragement! I’m really hoping that’s the case. I mean there were so many other educated first timer ladies inside who were serving their sentence for drugs. It will be a real pity if their future were to be ruined because of tht moment of folly.

Thanks for the encouragement. Having a record is such a taboo tht no one ever talks about it. I’m really wondering how many ppl in the working class actually have records out there.
yes I’m focusing on only the private sectors cos the Govt would very unlikely even consider.
how about the MNCs? some have this equal opportunity guideline that they follow, would tht increase my chances?

Yep.. worth a try, polish up your interview skills, start off with positions you have experience in and work your way from there. Take note that this period is very challenging, so job-finding is already tough as it is, with many hire-freeze... and it gets depressing very fast, very easily... keep finding ways to be positive in sending your resumes even if there aren't that many replies.

Do your job well. Be productive and responsible. Be a good performer.

Unless your job deals with vulnerable populations and requires police clearance and stuff like that I doubt your employer will really bother that you had conviction records before if you are a good performer.

If your boss does mind then he or she is discriminatory and a bigot.

So sleep well.
