SINGAPORE — Former Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew has been appointed as the new Singapore ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 31).
Mr Lui was previously Singapore's ambassador to Japan from June 2017 to October 2019. He helmed several ministries before that, serving as Transport Minister from 2011 to 2015, as Second Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2011 to 2012 and Second Minister for Defence in 2015.
The Singapore Embassy in Tokyo said in a Facebook post on Oct 26 that during Mr Lui’s tenure in Japan, he oversaw the strengthening of bilateral relations, exemplified by the numerous high-level visits between the two countries.
This year was “especially significant”, the embassy said, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and many Cabinet ministers visiting Japan to attend the various G20 events during Japan’s presidency, as well as President Halimah Yacob’s recent visit to Tokyo to attend the Enthronement Ceremony of Emperor Naruhito.
In terms of economic cooperation, Singapore and Japan "broke new ground" in cooperating to develop infrastructure in other countries with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Enterprise Singapore and the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport and Urban Development, the embassy said.
“Air connectivity also expanded, with the launch of direct flights from Singapore to Hiroshima and Okinawa by Silkair and Jetstar respectively.”
Commenting on Mr Lui’s new appointment, President Halimah said in a Facebook post that she is “confident that he will carry out his duties well”.
