When a son or daughter is returning from a weekend in Bangkok, the entire family, including grandmother and uncles, embark on a trip to Yangon International Airport to welcome the returning family member.

There is no word for tourist in Myanmar’s language. The word “tourist,” has been adapted in a business context, but the closest translation in everyday language is “guest.” This fact explains the value of showing hospitality in Myanmar, recently reputed to be among the friendliest countries to visit.

The high value placed on hospitality is integral to the notion of family. In Myanmar, the family provides the social, financial (and emotional) security and support that is provided by insurance companies and banks in Western society. Hence, individuals in the Western world can exist without family support, an alien thought in Myanmar where these institutions barely exist. This also explains why the local population expresses an overwhelming degree of help and support to single travelers who are considered alone and vulnerable. Myanmar hospitality is legendary and widespread.
