Errr...we can study everything in the present and wish for anything for the future. However, I meant this poll as a reflection on the past - which regime would have been best if continued to now.

I've heard from grandma's and great grandma's generations, Brits were fine. They gave you jobs, they allowed your children to go school, and if your family struck it rich they allowed you to become rich influential families, regardless of backgrounds whether peasants from Canton, Hokkien, Java or Tamil Nadu. You didn't have to have background connections, just make it on your own from ground zero, nothing was added to you and nothing was taken from you, pure meritocracy. Whether you're Chinese or Indian immigrants from the most undesirable parts of China, Malaysia, Indonesia or India etc. during those times, you got what you worked for.

The only privileged peoples were the British. They came here to govern and administer and controlled the military. However, that "privilege" or "superiority" was widely regarded as fair since it was the British who founded Singapore as a viable port and city in the first place. Without the British founding and opening Singapore up, there'd be no such opportunities for Chinese, Malay and Indian immigrants.

Sorry Ramseth... It's truely shocking to read what you just wrote.

You can replace "Brits" with "PAP" and it will still be true

I guess the White Man is (still) perceived as superior

Again, no offense intended at all

50 years ago, if I was around that is - i would have voted 'independence' and joined LKY shouting 'merdeka merdeka' in the padang ...

50 years later, after i kenna the nonsense of LHL and his papa & their governance/policies, i am hereby voting 'colonial british' ... :o

at least those old folks who grew up duing british rule now have a small pension to tide them over their golden years ... in contrast, Ah Loong wants to retain our CPF & make us buy annuity ... and correct me if im wrong, the annuity are given out throughout your lifespan, but the amount is not guaranteed ? the amount is variable (not fixed) ? how to survive ? how to plan ? ...

i just learnt a new word from a book i read - 'plutonomy' - which means a country is ruled by the richest people of that country ... maybe such a regime best describes singabloodypore ...

No, no, no. Far from being offended, I welcome discussion of opinions.

However, I don't understand how the equation of PAP to British. British rule is rule by "white men" from faraway, but PAP is drawn from locals.

I was just drawing the similarities between British colonial rule and PAP's system

Both are elitist, right-winged and efficient (aka authoritarian)

Both also have had great credentials in modernising projects

Difference is skin colour

So between white man and a home grown leader, I would choose a local

Nobody in his right mind would choose Japanese colony unless he is a traitor of Japanese descent.

You forgot to mention that they left Singapore with a very large national reserves in the treasury which LKY took over, and that Hakka fuck claim to have build it up by PAP.
