鴻海董事長郭台銘宣布參選總統，成為韓粉霸主高雄市長韓國瑜能否披掛上陣的一大變數。《壹週刊》調查，韓國瑜剛開始確實沒想要選總統，但支持者的簇擁與鷹派幕僚的說服，讓他對被動徵召攻大位起心動念。只是，韓國瑜半推半就之際，郭台銘卻毫不遮掩地公布了他的雄心野望，還以媽祖托夢為自己掛保證，打亂了國民黨原已經準備拱韓的佈局。
國民黨主席吳敦義今天下午頒贈榮譽獎狀給鴻海董事長郭台銘，郭台銘接獲獎狀後先是呼籲，希望國民黨建立初選制度，接著宣布「我願意參加初選、絕對不接受徵召」，如果選上就代表國民黨角逐2020總統大選；如果沒選上就表示努力不夠，但一定全力支持國民黨初選制度所產生的候選人。知情人士指出，郭台銘本月月初已經召集鴻海高層開會，商討參選、鴻海企業接班一事，而且也正在組競選委員會，先以辦公室幕僚人馬為主，老臣仍然留在公司穩住企業，似乎有長期抗戰的打算。
郭董積極佈陣，據了解，韓國瑜在出訪美國前曾致電國民黨主席吳敦義，表示自己「對黨內2020年總統初選，沒有規劃」。但他出訪美國期間，一會兒拉高規格喊「台灣安全、人民有錢」，一會兒火力全開批藍綠兩黨玩殘台灣經濟，欲挑戰總統大位不言而喻、呼之欲出，一名資深藍營立委稱，「這難道不是想選總統？」但也有人解讀韓國瑜定調「拚經濟」，是在為郭台銘出來的正當性鋪路。
韓國瑜友人透露，韓目前最大難關是「能否說服高雄市民讓他去選總統」，所以絕對不能參與黨內初選，只能「被動接受徵召」，而且時間要愈晚愈好，慢慢等到選總統的正當性。

《壹週刊》調查，韓國瑜團隊、身邊友人對於他要不要選總統，鷹派、鴿派的聲音都有。鷹派以高雄市觀光局長潘恆旭為首，力主韓國瑜順勢而為、力拚總統一戰。潘曾經受媒體訪問談及韓國瑜參選總統一事，引用明太祖朱元璋9字方針「高築牆、廣積糧、緩稱王」，來形容韓國瑜目前態勢。
不過內部也有鴿派人士認為，韓國瑜好不容易選上國民黨30年都拿不回來的高雄，是基於「討厭民進黨、該換人做做看」這股氛圍而選上，如今這股聲音在網路上漸漸被削弱，再加上高雄4年任期沒做完，就立刻要投入總統選戰，不是沒有政治風險。
至於韓國瑜的主觀想法為何？一位曾與韓論及此話題的友人說，對於藉著聲勢順水推舟攻上總統大位，韓國瑜一度起心動念。但親近韓國瑜的國民黨立委許淑華分析，韓國瑜對於民眾支持立場應該是「成功不必在我」，不過「該承擔就會承擔」，現階段把高雄市政做好之心不變，未來還是必須看黨中央規劃再定奪。

郭台銘還給國民黨三點建議，第一為當黨員、中常委是責任、擔當，不是來發財；第二，人民利益永遠大於黨利益；第三必須創造年輕人有希望的環境。
