A Singaporean's guide to living in Thailand

1. Khon Kaen is far from ulu. After Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya it’s probably the next most developed city in Thailand. It’s got all the amenities a modern city has. As a matter of fact an elevated dual way train from Korat to Khon Kaen is almost completed will be expecting to start operation end of the year. Also a light rail system for the city should start construction end of this year.

2. There are many more expensive hotels in Khon Kaen so $64 is considered inexpensive (I didn't say cheap), moreover for a screw salesman this is a rare luxury as normally my boss allow me to live in 750 baht ($31) salesman motel (other staff 500-600 baht) and breakfast consist of only boiled rice with bits of minced pork.

Yes, Khon Kaen is a happening place. It is one of the big 4 of Isan, alongside Korat, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani. Froggy, between your favourite pastime of makaning, you should check out the museum.... very informative.

I wish I have the time really. Trip like this is all work. Arrived on Saturday evening and after check in hotel only thing to do is eat, drink and sleep. Next morning visit customers at their hardware shops have lunch with one and its off tot he airport back to Bangkok. Overseas is slightly better I could always take a day or 2 off.

Found a new Italian restaurant in Satorn and I like it very much, Il Bolognese http://www.ilbolognesebangkok.com

Pretty big restaurant for indoor and outdoor dining. Yet the decor is rather cozy inside. Has a very big selection of wine in the restautant

Didn't order too much, just salad, soup, mussels and a pasta

Rocket salad

Starter, mesh potato with ham

I had a minestrone soup, love this soup for its originality

Excellent crab soup. The crab meat is a little chunky makes the feeling of having this soup more enjoyable instead of shredded meat, kudos to the chef being very careful when removing the meat.

French mussels, love this size, not too big and meat is sweet

Lobster spaghetti, the pasta is perfectly cooked with taste of lobster infused into it, viola

Finish of the meal with grappa and lemoncello

So did you arrange for a home demo?:wink:

I've always enjoyed the foodfare at the Republic food court at Mega Bangna. Credit to Breadtalk for making it half Thai half Sinkeepoo.

I been there a few times only thing I saw that resemble Singapore is that Sergeant Chicken Rice and that's like the only store. I may have miss the other stores like you mentioned half Singapore, what other Singapore dishes are there I'd love to makan.

Not surprising

Thailand ranks 10th most popular for global visitors
Thailand continued to position itself as a destination for travellers to visit by staying in the top 10 in the latest report by the UN travel agency.
With 35.4 million visitors in 2017, the kingdom dropped one spot from ninth in 2016 to 10th last year, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) said in its recently released tourism highlights.

France remained the most popular destination, with 86.9 million travellers, while Spain overtook the United States as the second most-visited destination when it recorded 81.8 million international arrivals, compared with 75.9 million in the US.
Thailand remained fourth in tourism earnings, with US$57.5 billion, while Macao and Japan cracked the top 10 for the first time.

The top three countries enjoying the most spending from visitors were unchanged, led by the US ($210 billion), Spain ($68 billion) and France ($60.7 billion).

The Tourism and Sports Ministry projected 38 million visitors this year, about 11 million from China. The country reached half-way of the target when more than 19 million arrived in the first six months.

The ministry expected a drop of Chinese tourists last month in the wake of the Phoenix boat tragedy in Phuket in July that killed 47 travellers from China. China dominated global tourism last year with plenty of money to splash out. They spent almost $258 billion last year, accounting for almost one-fifth of the world's total spending of $1.3 trillion.
"China continues to lead global outbound travel in terms of expenditure," the report said.

International tourist arrivals set a new record of 1.32 billion last year and the tourism sector has grown for eight years in a row, it added. The report did not detail nationalities of outbound travellers.

Millions of soldier crabs return to Krabi
Breaking News August 30, 2018 18:30
By The Thaiger

Millions of soldier crabs have once again been spotted cavorting around Klong Sai Din Dang Noi Beach in Muang Krabi following a three-year absence.

Niwat Wattanayommanaphon, a committee member of the Krabi conservationist group, said: “Soldier crabs were last seen three years ago, but have shown up again this year. They are about 1cm wide and its shell is bright orange. We can spot them during low tide.”

Soldier crabs are thought to seek out the beach due to the high quantities of plankton which they eat. Niwat said the sightings are encouraging. “The presence of these crabs also indicates that marine life is thriving in this popular tourist area. Conserving their ecosystem should be a priority.”
