Mr. Kim is considered one of the greatest human rights violators in the world. North Korea has jailed citizens for political dissidence and executed at least 340 people since he took over in 2011.
Asked on Friday how he could ignore Mr. Kim’s record, the president said: “You know why? Because I don’t want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family.”
“I can only speak to the fact that we signed an incredible agreement,” Mr. Trump said. “It’s great. It’s going to be great for them, too, because now North Korea can develop, and North Korea can become a great country economically.”
He added: “It can become whatever they want. But there won’t be nuclear weapons, and they won’t be aimed at you and your family.”
