We have often heard government ministers saying that, regardless of your background, it is possible to succeed in Singapore. Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam reiterated this on Sunday (“Anyone can succeed in Singapore, regardless of family background: Shanmugam”; May 20).

However, the reality is that children in dysfunctional families do face more odds: The lack of role models, the lack of stability and routine, the lack of meaningful activities, and so on.

Mr Shanmugam is putting the onus on parents to do what is right by their children, but these parents may also have problems holding down a job, keeping a marriage together, or keeping themselves clean from drug, alcohol and gambling addictions, for example.

I told you before, everyone has a limit to their tolerance and patience. Even the nicest pple will get upset and retaliate. It is not in my nature to be nasty and cruel.
