hk mtr is becoming just like another shitty system such as bart. they haven't figured out the root cause of a major breakdown and outage from 2 years ago. the problem is not permanently fixed. if it happens once it will happen again. just a matter of time or when the next wet season strikes.

see my thread on bart. the best and brightest in bay area cannot yet solve the mystery and misery of the sudden surge syndrome. it is happening in the wake of a wet season.

The Hong Kong MTR was built well before Singapore and still continues to maintain high standards. Since Temasek began controlling their assets to deliver returns, standards have dropped.

Yes .. delivering high returns and wanting more revenue and profits is their priority..and hence downstream, we the commuters suffered more breakdowns and delays.

Having a Duty-Free salesgirl with no knowledge of trains or engines to helm an important job, handling the Nation rail system is a total disaster. Who is on the hiring committee that select and employ Saw Phiak Hwa. ?

Strictly, the blame is on the PM..who for 9 years did not intercede just because he wants to inflate figures on all fronts. ( going for higher GDP at all cost)

This, evidently points to his poor leadership.

I just came back from Shanghai and was at the People"s Square MRT station there to get to their National Museum.

I was amazed that this station has 20 exits and the millions of commuters using this line is able to move around and get to their destinations with ease. They have 16 lines for their trains in this chinese city.

Daily, more than 10 million people ride the trains in this city..

In contrast, we have 5 lines and carries only 3 million passenger daily.

On record, percentage wise: we have more headaches and breakdowns.

On record, SMRT CEO is over-paid more than 10 times for his job.

The Singapore's MRT is less challenging to operate because it is supposedly newer and should be more advanced,
compared to the Hong Kong's MTR and Toronto's TTC (which is old and in need of significant repairs and upgrading),
as well as having to operate in more adverse conditions, such as heat and humidity, freezing rain, snow and extreme cold.

Yet the HK's MTR and Toronto's TTC probably has less disruptions.

The CEO of the TTC makes about $323,000 a year, whereas there are many Operators (bus drivers, subway drivers, etc.) and as well as Station Ticket Collectors who make more than $100,000 a year.
Whereas the CEO of Singapore's MRT makes about $2 million compared to the bus drivers and operators who may make about $30,000 to $40,000.

SBS Transit seems to be doing a better job of managing MRT lines than SMRT. It would probably be more cost-efficient to transfer all the MRT lines to SBS Transit, and fire the overpaid SMRT CEO and senior management. It could help reduce public transport costs for Sinkies.

Look at some facts...Singapore is fifth on cronyism index...Temasek owns and run more than 30%
of the economy. It must be their strategy to control, employ their own people and hence garner the party votes.
