Maifan Stone ~ Where can I get these in Singapore?

A China colleague, a very good friend of mine bought a couple of these Maifan stones for me a couple of months ago. She told me ~ when boiling water, drop a few of these stones into the kettle and boil together with the water, saying that it is good for my health.

I tried it and I am pleasantly surprised it does make the plain water taste nicer, richer and palatable to gulp.

I read further about this stone on Wikipedia. Below is an extract and a picture of how it looks like on the net.

Maifan Stone (Chn. 麦饭石 or 麥飯石), also known as "bakuhanseki (Jp. 麦飯石)," is a special mineral rock used in Chinese medicine to treat various skin diseases. It is composed of minerals including but not limited to plagioclase feldspar, orthoclase feldspar, hornblende, and biotite (all four mentioned before are silicate minerals).

Maifan Stone contains plenty of micro-nutrient elements, such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, and selenium, all essential to a healthy human body.

As a Chinese medicine, it is especially useful in treating skin tumors and ulcers. In addition to that, many mineral water manufacturers in China dissolve a small amount of Maifan Stone during the preparation of their product, meant to enhance the micro-nutrient density in the water. In ordinary cooking, both rice and tea, while being washed, may be dipped with Maifan Stone to increase their effects on health.

Maifan stone has been used as a water filtration and conditioning media for shower and bath filters.

As she has gone back and not coming back till some time next year, I thought I might be able to get in Singapore. I went to Yue Hwa in Chinatown, Traditional medicinal shops, and even specialist Chinese tea shops ~ no one sells Maifan stone.

I am just trying my luck here, perhaps one of you do use the same stones for cooking or preparing water for drinking at home. If you do, I will be thankful if you can let me know where I can source for these stones in Singapore.

Good afternoon R2D2.

Micro, I have seen K-Art cookware using maifan as an ingredient to make their woks, pots and other wares.

I guess the Koreans must have harnessed their technology to shape these stones into cookware. I have not bought them yet to try out. Another friend of mine did, and the feedback was that her fried rice feels like the one you get from tsechar outlets, rice is sperated well, grainy instead of lumping together in most home cooked fried rice.

I guess it's the even temperature of the stone that makes it easier to achieve the same standard as tsechar stores.

I am wondering if it will work well with searing of steak at high and even temperature to keep the juices intact for a well bodied medium rare steak.

John, I read your link. Hilarious! haha!

Thanks for making me smile on a boring Saturday afternoon

You are welcome. I should also thank the TS for this thread. If not, I would have forgotten about this tale. I read this story tale when I was a kid and I liked it very much. Totally forgot about it until I saw this thread.

My pleasure, John.

However, I am seriously and honestly looking for these Maifan stones. Not so much for whatever "claimed" benefits that it is supposed to possess, but more for making plain water easier to drink.

Micro's aquarium idea seems to be worth exploring later when I get out of the apartment. The weather is simply too hot to step outside now.

Interesting that they use these stones for aquarium purposes.

The link you provided with the picture looks to be processed maifan stones glued into a bigger piece. I am not sure if I can use them even if I get it from the aquarium.

Buy the maifan cooking set ish safer...

Micro, I will explore the aquarium as you have suggested first. I need the actual stones and not a pot or wok.

Wish me luck and hopefully I wouldn't be ridiculed by the aquarium shopkeeper.

Micro, I just watched the video on maifan cookware. Interesting, though I am not sure what is the difference between Maifan Nano vs the real Maifan stones.
