Configuring and customising wordpress is not web design. All you're doing is working with prebuilt templates.
In order to do web design, you need to be proficient in HTML 5 and programs such as Dreamweaver.

I gave up web design a long time ago. Too hard and complex for me.
I now do websites for clients using mainly Joomla.
thanks boss. i know html5, many source can be found on internet as well. is joomla another variant for wordpress?
https://blog.udemy.com/drupal-vs-joomla-vs-wordpress/
I started out using Mambo way back in the early 2000s... then switched to Joomla when they split from Mambo.
I use it because I am so familiar with it. It's also supposedly more secure than Wordpress which requires lots of 3rd party security enhancements.
If you're already familiar with wordpress, it would not make sense to switch to anything else.

I do agree it is hard to do web design.
These are the coding software you need to masters:
1. html5 - for structure of web page
2. CSs3 - for styling web page
3. JavaScript for user interface or response-
JavaScript is hard to learn but once you master it the rest of coding programs like python, ruby on rail, java, Objective C++ (for Facebook and IOS) comes easy.
If you master JavaScript you can go into hmtl5 game development (design games) coding using Canvas. In the Canvas you use JavaScript to code the game/ adverts and so on. These days Canvas is the in-thing for advertising which is replacing SWF coding soon.
6. Then you can go on to particle coding which is the in-thing for web today.
5. For backend support you need to know MySQL and Php/python for forms.
7. Now you have a new Coffee Script coding which is combination of python, ruby and Java using JavaScript style coding.
In Apple you need to know Objective C++ and now new Swift.
Of all, you need to learn JavaScript first because many as Swift is written in JavaScript style coding.
For android you need to learn Java coding which has new coding known as JavaFX.
For writing application you kneed to learn Python, ruby on rail, java and leas Raspberry Pi.
Recommend to learn Raspberry Pi today for writing app to switch on appliances and for future Tesla car development.
Raspberry Pi use python coding.
Which iPhone, tablet and PC, so many coding program to know these days.
If you want to get into Microsoft open source development today they use python coding.
Good luck.
as I said, if you master one of the coding program the other is easy to follow. Their coding principle is the only use different style of writing codes.
Coding principle is easy to follow:
1, know what is variable,
2. know what is function or use function
3. Loopomg
4. conditions
5. event handlers or Ad Event Listeners.
Html5 is easy to learn which learn together with Css3.
You can download free ibook and start learning html5 first.
once you master html5 and Css3 you will follow up learn in JavaScript.
I know html5, Css3, JavaScript and now into python and php coding for forms.
thanks, how much you charge for setting up a website? and do you make recommendations or your customers make customizsation? thanks boss.
It varies considerably. It all depends on how much customization is required. I usually estimate the number of hours it would take and quote accordingly at a rate of NZD120 per hour.
I also charge for photography services which often takes even more time than putting the website together especially when it comes to product photography which can be painstakingly hard to get right.
do you need to learn so much? nowadays, scripts and form can be downloaded, you only need to make some amendment.

wordpress has its own mysql, i think it's sufficient. actually, even the slider, wordpress has it.
