[TD] Singapore urges reconciliation after Akihito, Abe's statements
Singapore's Foreign Ministry on Sunday urged countries affected by Japan's actions in World War II to move forward in their relations with Japan after the statements made by Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the 70th anniversary of the end of that war.
It is "important for all countries to build upon the statements of His Majesty Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Abe and previous Japanese Cabinets to seek further reconciliation and move forward."
"This will benefit our region and the world," the ministry said in a statement issued just after midnight on Sunday.
It said Singapore's own position is that "Japan should accept clear responsibility for the war."
"Singapore has not forgotten the horrors and suffering of World War II."
It is believed that about 50,000 local civilians were killed by the Japanese during their occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945.
The ministry noted that Abe's statement expressed profound grief and sincere condolences for those who perished during the war.
On Saturday, Emperor Akihito also expressed the need for Japan to reflect on its past, adding "I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never be repeated."
