'By 2030, our rail network will be almost as dense as New York and London, and we would have achieved this in under 50 years, compared to the more than 100 years that it took the two cities.'!! First of all, catching NY or London in 50 years - is that a great achievement?? I mean 50 freaking years!! That's a life time for some! Second, no matter how much he try to defend, most of us already scored LTA and SMRT an 'F' for all the cockups so far. Now we r just waiting for someone to hari Kiri as one minister suggested as price of failure!

We need to line all of them up, and then one by one, fall on their swords.
Sorry, my fantasy got the better of me.
Too good a dream to be true.

Make sure your existing MRT lines are in proper working condition before you build more lines... oops too late. Already I see construction sites for Thomson Line MRT stations.

There are three main reasons I believe the PAP govt keeps building MRT stations:

1) Creates income opportunities for their cronies in the construction industry.

2) Milk Sinkies dry through ever-increasing fares... their form of 'passive income'.

3) Increase the value of the land around the stations, so their buddies at the SLA could concurrently sell those parcels of lands to developers.

The pappies are devious business people. If they could monetize the air you breathe, they would.

Have you taken the London Tube and the NYC death trains???

If you score SMRT and F, there aren't enough letters in the alphabet to rate London and NYC. They'd have to rate Z----------- not to mention the fact that the fares are 3 to 5 times higher.

The difference is in the technology. Back then when NY was building the tube, there were no massive tunnelling equipment nor other advance equipment. It is not real success at all. Just an advancement of tech and things got faster. 10 years later, they may even be able to build a building in a month with 3D printing technology. So would that be an achievement over the empire state?

If it's so damned easy nowadays to build an MRT system to match the London Underground, every city the size of Singapore would have one.

They are. It is just whether the political master want to do it or not. Look at China's MRT system? It was only built recently. Not much trouble with that. US is also starting gto build an inter-state rail system after years of lobby against by car manufacturers.

it would take a 100 yrs for london and NY to catch up with the disruption in singapore.
