Some shops in Jurong shopping mall JEM were cordoned off for about four hours after the sprinklers on the third level of the mall went off, covering the floor with about three centimetres of water.

<!-- /tab-gallery-area --> SINGAPORE: An issue with Jurong shopping mall JEM's atrium sprinklers caused parts of the shopping mall to be covered with about three centimetres of water on Tuesday.
A statement from mall management Lend Lease said the atrium-side sprinklers on the third floor had been triggered at 12:15pm, resulting in water collecting at a small section of the mall's common areas on Basement 1, the first and second floors.
Lend Lease did not say what triggered the sprinklers but that the water was cleared by 4pm.

Channel NewsAsia understands about 15 shops were cordoned off after cleaners had mopped up the affected area.

Salesgirl Dharishini Doraisamy told Channel NewsAsia the incident was like "indoor rain" that lasted for a few minutes.

Despite Lend Lease saying that JEM is still open for business, some shops remained closed, with Lowry's Farm and Poh Heng Jewellery staff saying they would remain shut for the rest of the day to clean up.
Ogawa, a manufacturer of massage chairs, said about 10 chairs and other smaller equipment were damaged, though the extent of the damage was unclear.
JEM opened almost a year ago to the day on June 15, 2013 - after a four-day delay because it could not secure a fire permit in time.

Last August, two fires broke out, and in September, the mall was closed for almost two weeks after a burst pipe led to the collapse of a false ceiling.

so someone finally learnt the use of deluge sprinkler again.. last i remember same incident at raffles place a few years back.

cheap solution does not always work.

isn't the first time jem got flooded. This sc has many problems. The opening got delayed and so on.

Why..???

All because they rush through the job..

They allow the shopping mall to be opened even when there is dangerous construction activities going on above the shoppers head.

It is very dangerous to give part TOP and allow shoppers to go into an uncompleted building. ( they are doing the same to Bedok Mall)

It is very unethical of them to look for growth, revenue at the expense of human lives.
One day if may not even rain water down on shoppers, it may well be raining debris
and then we will have fatalities in the hundreds...

All of the new malls do 'soft launches'. It is good to be rent-seeking and improve the economy in Singapore. ;)

The newer malls have a flimsy feel to them. The older malls (e.g. Lucky Plaza, City Plaza, IMM, Beauty World Centre) feel sturdier, less of those thin hollow walls.

JEM is fucking cursed. They should hire some fengshui guy to do something, or demand a refund if they have already done so.

Is it really cursed..???

Will it be the second..." Hotel New World.."""

Heard from the security guards there that the place is very ''dirty'' after midnight especially near the loading bay at the back.:o

Festival Walk slammed for poor maintenance after Black Rainstorm flooding
PHILA SIU, CHEUNG CHI-FAI, MIMI LAU AND HE HUIFENG
PUBLISHED : Monday, 31 March, 2014, 11:37pm
UPDATED : Tuesday, 01 April, 2014, 6:13pm

The Festival Walk shopping mall came under fire yesterday, accused of poor maintenance and a slow response to Sunday's flood following a burst pipe, as shopkeepers mopped up and counted the cost.

The criticism came as the Observatory warned that heavy rain and squally thunderstorms would continue to affect Hong Kong and the region for several days.

...........

The Buildings Department yesterday denied speculation that the flooding of Festival Walk was caused by hailstones breaking a glass panel. It said a broken rainwater pipe was to blame for water pouring into the centre.

About 10 shops and restaurants near the unwelcome waterfall were closed or partially shut to clean up the mess.

"It was not because the glass ceiling or glass windows were broken," a spokesman said.

A manager at the Cole Haan boutique said: "Someone was suddenly screaming outside on Sunday night, so I went out and had a look.

"It was like it was raining inside the mall. I then found water dripping from the ceiling of my shop."

Chan Chi-ming, head of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education's department of construction, said he believed the pipe broke because of poor maintenance of connecting joints. After inspecting the mall, he said the managers of the shopping centre should have done more to protect customers.

"The mall should have immediately evacuated the shoppers because it was dangerous," he added.

Mapletree Greater China Commercial Trust, which bought the mall from Swire Pacific in 2011, said it would take more precautions to ensure the safety of tenants and visitors. Mapletree is owned by Singapore state investment firm Temasek Holdings.

Double triggering of derectors to activate this. Someone set up smoke? Or too much dust.

JEM screw up contractor la this is what u get in return!

They were fcuking strict with contractors this can not! that can not!

every thing must purchase from JEM. Delayed in opening also screwed by contractors!

Now this again!!

you pariah dog.
sprinkler is not activated by smoke or dust sensor.

fark you. you dont know a single thing about deluge sprinklers for protection of atrium.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_sprinkler_system

Deluge systems

"Deluge" systems are systems in which all sprinklers connected to the water piping system are open, in that the heat sensing operating element is removed, or specifically designed as such. These systems are used for special hazards where rapid fire spread is a concern, as they provide a simultaneous application of water over the entire hazard. They are sometimes installed in personnel egress paths or building openings to slow travel of fire (e.g., openings in a fire-rated wall).

Water is not present in the piping until the system operates. Because the sprinkler orifices are open, the piping is at atmospheric pressure. To prevent the water supply pressure from forcing water into the piping, a deluge valve is used in the water supply connection, which is a mechanically latched valve. It is a non-resetting valve, and stays open once tripped.

Because the heat sensing elements present in the automatic sprinklers have been removed (resulting in open sprinklers), the deluge valve must be opened as signaled by a fire alarm system. The type of fire alarm initiating device is selected mainly based on the hazard (e.g., smoke detectors, heat detectors, or optical flame detectors). The initiation device signals the fire alarm panel, which in turn signals the deluge valve to open. Activation can also be manual, depending on the system goals. Manual activation is usually via an electric or pneumatic fire alarm pull station, which signals the fire alarm panel, which in turn signals the deluge valve to open.

Operation - Activation of a fire alarm initiating device, or a manual pull station, signals the fire alarm panel, which in turn signals the deluge valve to open, allowing water to enter the piping system. Water flows from all sprinklers simultaneously.

once in 50 years indoor rain

This one, you must call, Dr.Ibrahim....(psst, after no longer in charge of 'tong sampan', Yakult new shit paper title), the expert on the 50 years old thing & after the sprinklings, this is real ponding!.:D
