Background to Thailand and its politics

I am aware there are people who are curious why Thailand has this long running saga since it is a "democracy"

Thailand despite its March to democracy has never been one. It remains firmly a Monarchy. Its Monarch and the religion are also intertwined. The laws of the land prevents any insults or derogatory remarks to be made against the Monrachy = else majesty law.

No democratic elected leader can govern unless he agrees to be subservient to the Monarch. The entire Thai elite society is aligned with the Monarch because the Monarch actually owns their sovereign fund outright. These include nearly all the blue chip companies including banks and large swathe of commercial land.

Because of the else Majeste law which prohibit any form of criticism no matter how true it is, every Thai engages in shadow boxing to stop them falling foul of the lese Majeste laws.

This shadow boxing is manifested in the colours yellow and red. Yellow is pro Monarch and red is anti-Monarch.

Thaksin first came to power with the blessing of the King. The king also gave him certain royal privileges. Thaksin actually began to do lots of good things. He also realised that the rural sector was taken advantage by the elite especially in primary produce in particular rice. Thaksin whose popularity began to increase both with the Rpyalist, the pro monarch elite as well as the ignorant rural lot began to take on the crime lords across the countries. Drug kingpins and arms traffickers were subjected vigilante justice undertaken by the Police and Army in plainclothes.

The elite who had links to the crime lords began to see their pockets hurt. Then Thaksin made the monumental mistake. The Queen who was portrayed as the guardian of the rural folks who was known for for her numerous visits to various parts of Thailand and revered by them became to be impacted by Thaksin rhetoric about they being taken advantage by the elite. Thaksin was losing ground with the Elite over the crime crackdown and decided he will rely on the rural Thai for votes. He increased the price of rice to farmers, stopped the middlemen screwing them. The rural folks realised that they had the political power to get a better life and began to recognise the value of the vote.

The Queen who was not into politics stopped going out and the things turned ugly.

The country is facing an impasse as rural votes outnumber the urban elite. So no democratically elected leader will survive for long as the votes comes from the rural sector who longer trust the king and wear red.

At end of the Asian currency crisis, when his sovereign fund was depleted, the King actually raided the treasury to reinstate his portfolio. The portfolio is called the Crown Property Bureau. It is run by 2 Australians. it contains Siam Commercial Bank, Siam Cement, etc The elite's dependency with the king is that most the commercial land in Bangkok belongs to him and he leases it below market price to them.

Forbes ranks as richer than the Brunei Sultan.

I really hope the King will die soon. Now that will be a renewal! Start from year 0. Something familiar is nagging me.....what is it?

Yes, and then this couple will take over as the new King and Queen. I can't wait for her to make her first state visit here.

What about the prophecy that the Thai Monarchy wont survive? If the King is raiding the reserves that means the monarchy will not survive his death,,,and if the article is right, the rural people no long revere the King so it will be a great upheaval,

The Queen is not popular with the Thais. Likewise the Crown Prince. That's why the King appointed a Crown Princess, who would have the opportunity to ascend the throne upon his passing.

The article is about right.
Just that its more complicated than yellow = pro monarch and red = anti monarch. There are many subsets within the 2 colors and other smaller movement using white, pink, rainbow colors.
Also the queen is not above politics and not popular at all....though not as hated as her son. The crown princess is the one that command adoration similar to the king.

Most Thais regardless of political affiliation genuinely respect and adore the king.
Decades of well crafted PR machinery churning out propaganda and genuine hard work put in by the king ensures he has an untouchable public persona and moral authority that is second to none. His status and reverence commanded is god like.

Note that all the political brinksmanship till now has not gone to extremes yet....key players on both sides not willing to go for broke as yet. Perhaps both sides waiting for the king to pass on.....
Inside info tells me the king is actually not ill and only staying in hospital to distance himself from the fray....so it could be a long wait yet.

Don't you think something is amiss that, this time the Junta did NOT seek Royal Endorsement like any other coup?

Good. The Chakri dynasty will not last beyond the ninth monarch.

Thailand will be ruled by a dictator.

The monarchy still not lost its shine upcountry yet.
But slowly and surely its heading towards that direction.
The red movement upcountry is well organized, structured and systematic.
They have their own propaganda machine with radio stations, newsletters, school syllabus that advocate republicanism.
When the crown prince ascends to the throne, you can expect more Thais to lose their respect for royalty.
So now you know why the royal house is so hell bent on getting rid of thaksin (who probably harbour hopes to be the first thai president).

Official Royal endorsement will come only after dust settles.
If coup is unsuccessful then the king will malu right....also HE cannot be seen as 'approving' the coup.
Do not expect the generals was acting by themselves....you give them too much credit....check out the coup leader bio and its obvious where his loyalty lies.

The King stopped this practice long long time ago. In its place for period of time it was done by Field Marshall Prem Tinsulanonda, Head of Privy Council. In 1981, when the young turks in the Army began their insurrection, it was Prem who escorted the Royal family to safety. Thereafter he became the second most powerful man after the King. All coup leaders would have to be endorsed by him. It was Prem who initiated the actions that led to Thaksin downfall.

There is no other country in the world except for Bhutan where the Monarch is central and everyday part of life as in Thailand. He is considered as the head of family as well as a living god. The adoration is beyond belief. You cannot have a conversation about the Monarch even if it good with a Thai that you meet for the first time. They go very quiet. There are street vendors that sell photos of the Monarch everywhere in the Thailand. It is the same in the rural areas.

Inwardly since the Thaksin era, those especially in the rural sector are treating this someone they loved and revered and is too close and therefore the manifestion of colour and shadow boxing. Its no different when one finds that his mother had a terrible repetitional past and buries it deep down inside.

When it comes to foreigners, even the die hard red shirt will defend the reputation of the Monarch with his iife. The symbolism is firmly entrenched.

What is interesting is that every time, a newly elected Government goes native, a new protest leader will be appointed and this done by the privy council.

Current thai laws does not allow for a female monarch.
I doubt this will come to pass even though this could be the best option to keep the royal institution going after number 9's demise.
The king is said to favour his playboy son as king.
Also no one dares to challenge the crown prince....his craziness can see him doing a mass royal murder ala Nepali style.

For crying out loud TS how much do you know about Thai redshirts and Thai politics. Please don't spew nonsense to ignorant sinkies. If its your personal opinion then let it be known its your personal opinion. If you've got evidence please show it that red shirts are anti-monarchy.

Law (constitution) was amended in 1974 to allow a female to ascend to the throne.
