Sinkies are pretty well off by world standards so I can't see what sort of harm a small increase in fares will do once in a while. After all the fares are very cheap in comparison to other countries.
In London, the tube costs £ 3.80 for a short trip from Piccadilly to Wembley.
why not compare, in shenzhen i get to travel for free on public transport.

If Singaporeans want a high standard of living eg Swiss, UK, Norway, Sweden etc, they have to be prepared to pay a bit more for the privilege.
If they want a Chinese, Cambodia, Viet standard of living, I'm sure the fares could be lowered along with the big fat salaries they now earn.

am sure, very senior citizens selling tissues, cleaning tables, collecting dirty plates dishes and jaga toilets are common sights there,
