China would not build the Kra canal if they had not invested in building a huge port and oil and gas receiving terminal in tavoy ( now tawei) in Myanmar.
To make this natural deep water port complete, they must have the Kra canal.
From tawei, they are already constructing a LNG pipes and rail to kunming. This will be china's port in the Indian Ocean. Plus the rich LNG found off Myanmar will provide them with the fuel and incentive to further invest in the region.
Tawei will also be bangkok's port to the west.

Its high time they start to put plan to work on building the Kra Canal.. The Straits of Malacca is a congested shipping lane..I was involved in 6 salvage ops in that area for the last 6 years.. Vessels collision is very common there..

Neighboring countries should also improve on their ship repairing industry to tap into the overseas vessels coming to the region for maintenance..Once this is done, S'pore marine industry will have a huge headache..

Chinese shipping companies are complrtely independent of the government. There is no way the Central Government could influence shippers to use the Canal. Your over-imaginative mind will be better utilized in Jack Neo movies instead!
