I know a Holden Stateman V8 sedan owner, everytime he drive, I thought a bumboat has arrived into Changi jetty.

I suspect that the Sonata taxi is an old design. In the car world, Hyundais are improving at hare speed.
I test drive the ix35 series 2, it is an improvement over the Series 1, but the special tuned suspension is overrated. But again, I am testing the car on urban roads and turn corners without scarjng the young car salesgirl.

Reliability and build quality on Hyundais will surpass tge Japs, that is the promise from tge company president.
I just wait and see.

Koreans cars have come a long way since the Hyundai Pony was introduced (80s?), but still not up there with the top Jepun makes. However for the market segment below these top brands, they are serious competition and are worthwhile buys against some North American and European makes.

Agree that the top Jap brands are the best. If I were a towkay and want a car to reflect the status, I would definitely be deciding between Lexus, Acura, or Infiniti.

To be fair to the V8s (I think Holden is a branch of General Motors), they've refined and fine tuned the V8s over the years and in terms of horsepower, they have no equals (Ford, GM, Chrysler have their own legendary muscle cars and dragsters), but for the day-to-day commuter, any four cylinder will do the work of regular transportation and haulage and the general public do not want to have to feed and maintain a huge gas guzzler when a smaller 4 or 6 cylinder will do fine.

My old neighbour started with a Corolla in the late 60s. Still having one now. Each time new model shows up, he trades in his old.

Not really. It is also a symbol of your status and your power. I drive a Maserati not because I have to get from point A to point B but because I can.

There are people in the world who do not need to show off. They feel perfectly comfortable maintaining a low key profile.

There are many such characters in NZ. It is impossible to tell a person's wealth in NZ from the car they drive because most kiwis choose practicality over status. However, the rich will have a nice yacht moored somewhere and a plane or helicopter hidden away too.

The wealthy here buy stuff to cater to their lifestyle rather than to show off.

Hilux and D-Max are neck and neck.

My interest is in the Isuzu MU-X. It is exactly what I need. Toyota does not bring in the Fortuner or 4 runner. The Prado and the Land Cruiser are too big. They won't fit in my garage.

I think you got it the other way round. First there was the Hilux, then the built a cabin on the chasis and call it fortuner.
